FAKRA (SMB) Connector Information and Specifications

FAKRA Connectors are designed for automotive applications and are based on the SMB connector interface and comply with the standard for a uniform connector system established by FAKRA (FACHARBEITSKREIS AUTOMOBIL – German group of experts from vehicle manufacturers and equipment suppliers). Due to their special standard locking system FAKRA connectors fulfill the high functional and safety requirements of today’s automotive industry and are specified for 6 GHz in 50 omh or 60 ohm. These connectors are commonly used in GPS antenna, Engine management system, Analog/Digital radio, Auxiliary heating, TV/Video-displays, Antenna, Distributor box, Accident data analysis, Mobile phone, Remote control keyless entry, Distance control, Air pressure control, and Navigation systems.

The connectors are equipped with a standardized coding system which permits easy and fast assembly using fourteen possible coding options. The locking system has primary and secondary locking to prevent inadvertent detachment.

The FAKRA standard is described today in the DIN 72594-1 / ISO 20860-1 and harmonized with the USCAR-17 standard and the goal is to transfer the DIN and USCAR standard into an international ISO standard. USCAR-17 is meanwhile replaced by ISO 20860-1 and the same will happen with DIN 72594-1.

Warning! This upgrade will not create the new partitions required for the new POI system if you upgrade from 1xxx/2xxx. Upgrading from 3800-3910 is required so the new partitions are created.

Warning! 7L6 Touareg RNS 510’s are no longer supported since version 3870 due to the Touareg being fitted with the RNS 850. Version 1200 was the last version factory loaded on the 7L6 units with a hardware revision B.

Warning! There is a remote chance of you ‘bricking’ the unit, this is a fraction of a percent but it could happen! The process takes around 60 minutes.’

Warning! There are a small number of users where the RNS 510 does not know where it is after it’s been powered on, details of the previous location are kept in the unit but at this stage there is no pattern to this problem.

Warning! There are a small number of users where the RNS 510 display has a dim backlight after upgrading. See the post “Volkswagen RNS 510 Backlight Dim after upgrading Firmware” for more details.

Warning! Users with cars MY07 and earlier may experience power drain issues after the upgrade. See the post “Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue” for more details.

Warning! Users with the Skoda UHV bluetooth 1Z0 035 729 B (1Z0035729B) may want to delay upgrading the firmware, there is an issue with the RNS 510 no longer displaying the phone book and/or the call details but signal strength etc are visible for some phones. A HTC Diamond for example worked fine before the update but only partially afterwards however an iPhone 3G worked fine before and after. This is not a problem with the 1Z0 035 729 D (1Z0035729D) Skoda UHV bluetooth kit. The MFD functions as per normal with phone book and last calls listed correctly. Android 2.1 phones work fine with the update.

Note! Test/Setup Mode. The firmware can allow access to enter test/setup mode without Vagcom/VCDS access see Accessing the Setup Menu on the RNS 510 head units with firmware later than 1100. The procedure for entering the test/setup mode for those with Vagcom/VCDS is slightly different as well. To enter the test/setup mode when the RNS 510 is operating press and hold the setup button, keep holding it when the radio menu appears and shortly after the test menu appears . I had to reboot my unit after coding it but it may be possible a power cycle is enough.

Note! Failure (Gateway Error 202) You can downgrade back to 1100 by inserting the 1100 firmware and rebooting the RNS 510 (Setup + eject + info).

Volkswagen wire and cable specifications

An automotive wiring harness employs wires and cables. Each is made up of at least seven conductor strands (A), and
covered with an insulating material (B).

Within Volkswagen, wire and cable are classified in three general categories, and then specified according to size, type of insulation, and color.

Wires
Wires are stranded conductors ranging in size from 0.35 mm2 to 6.0 mm2 (approximately 22 to 9 gage (AWG)) that
make up most of a vehicle’s wiring harness. Smaller sizes save cost and weight. The larger sizes accommodate higher current loads with less resistance.

Wire larger than 6 mm2 (0 gage (AWG) is generally considered “cable.”

Wire size
Wire size (cross-sectional area) is the primary factor that will determine the current-carrying capacity of a conductor. Standard sizes differ slightly, depending on which measuring standard is used.

Volkswagen uses wire and cable that is manufactured according to the German industrial or “DIN” standards. Wire size is defined by cross-sectional area, and is measured in circular mils (mm2). As in the example shown, “0.75 mm” refers to the area (0.75 mm2), not the diameter.

Sizes of wire and cable originating in North America are described according to the American Wire Gage (AWG) standard. The standard wire sizes in both systems are roughly equivalent.

Volkswagen RNS 510 Firmware Upgrade and Information

To download firmware visit the Volkswagen RNS 510 Firmware Download Repository.

Update/Factory/Modified image

An update image is denoted by the extension .301 in the version.txt file and this will update without deleting music, maps or changing the partition sizes.

A factory image is denoted by the extension .901 in the version.txt file and this will delete your music, maps and may change the partition sizes.

However there are some custom modified update images that may perform other tasks like re-enabling the setup or re-partitioning the hard drive and this may wipe your music and maps so always make sure you have a copy of anything that you need. Modified firmware generally has fixes for Regensburg syndrome, MP3 VBR Resume, Test Mode and fixes for Gateways.

Revision/Version numbering system

Volkswagen have revised the revision/version number system and now each release is denoted with an 8 as the final digit, instead of a release being known as 4020 / 4024 / 4026 / 4028 it will now just be known as 5238.

The revision file on the firmware media now shows #VwSwIndex:5238/5238/5238/5238/5238 instead of #VwSwIndex:4020/4026/4028/4024

For older releases the final digit of the version number denotes the vehicle/type of head unit the firmware upgrade is for.

Volkswagen RNS 510 Information and Specifications

Experience with all the senses
The latest-generation navigation systems are outstanding for their simple operation and multi-functionality. The Volkswagen RNS 510 radio navigation system sets new standards in these areas, combining navigation and multimedia entertainment in a most innovative way. This makes it a real experience for all the senses. Why not find out for yourself?

That feels good
Progress that you can touch: for the first time ever, there is a Volkswagen navigation system that you can operate conveniently by means of a touchscreen. All you have to do is choose – do you want to see the map in 2D, topographically, or would you prefer a three-dimensional bird’s-eye view? The large TFT colour display always ensures excellent map reproduction. The intelligent split screen function divides the screen into map and additional information for greater clarity. Dynamic navigation with TMC helps you arrive at your destination more quickly.

And it looks good too
The RNS 510 is certainly worth a closer look: its high-quality DVD drive provides entertaining movie enjoyment with excellent picture quality – thanks to a high-resolution TFT monitor. A sophisticated sound system with eight speakers provides added listening enjoyment, no matter whether you prefer to listen to the radio or a CD. The integrated 30/40 GB hard disk offers space for your music collection – and, of course, for the navigation data. And the SD memory card system ensures a convenient exchange of data whenever you need it.

Does it leave you wanting more?
If you add a TV hybrid tuner (DVB-T) to the new RNS 510, then you can even watch television. The integrated videotext will help you stay abreast of the latest news. In the interests of your safety, these functions are, of course, only available when the vehicle is stationary. Making phone calls on the move will become even safer and more convenient in future. With the optional Bluetooth mobile phone preparation “Premium”, you can use the Phone button and touchscreen to access the telephone menu directly, scroll through the phone book and even enter numbers on the display.

The RNS 510 will continue in production until 2018 so development will continue until at least this time and for some time after.

Manufactured by Siemens VDO until 2010 and Continental from 2010 when they purchased Siemens VDO.

Revision B and C revision units

These units will become SW revision D after the upgrade however when coding the unit using VCDS you will receive the error
“Coding Rejected, Error 31: Request Out of Range”
Before saving the new coding manually add a 10th byte (00) at the end before pressing “Do It” as per the example below

9 byte coding (B/C SW revisions):
020104000400001100

10 byte coding (D SW revision):
02010400040000110000
