Adding a DAB/DAB+ aerial to the Volkswagen Golf Mark V & VI, Jetta, Passat and others

Adding a DAB/DAB+ aerial to the Volkswagen Golf Mark V & VI, Jetta, Passat and other models can be achieved in four ways.

  • Glass mounted stick on aerial <coming soon>
    (Surface mounted or external)
  • Using the OEM method of the rear window aerial <coming soon>
  • Roof mounted <coming soon>
    (Replacing the roof mounted aerial)

Adding a DAB/DAB+ aerial – DIY

Adding a DAB/DAB+ aerial – DIY is useful if you haven’t decided how to add on DAB/DAB+ support to your vehicle.

See the main article to see the other options – Adding a DAB/DAB+ aerial to the Volkswagen Golf Mark V & VI, Jetta, Passat and others The connector on the rear of the head unit is a Fakra Black Type A plug so a Fakra Black Type A jack (or a universal one) is required on the DIY aerial, see the this article for further information on Fakra connectors – FAKRA (SMB) Connector Information and Specifications.

In this example I’ve used a spare RNS 510 GPS aerial with RJ174 coax, cut off the GPS aerial and removed the Fakra Blue Type C jack housing from around the connector.

Construction is simple.

1. Strip away the outer insulation and the braided shield from the first 300mm.

2. Strip away the outer insulation on the next 230mm.

3. Make a coil after the braided section of 50mm in diameter and secure with some electrical tape or similar.

4. Add electrical tape or heatshrink to the end of the braided section as shown and the end of the aerial to enable it to be hung up.

This aerial is best suited to a static environment such as a house but works quite well in a vehicle in various locations such as behind the front seats and the b-pillars.

Adding DAB/DAB+ support to the Volkswagen Golf Mark V & VI, Jetta, Passat and others

Adding DAB+ support to Australian Volkswagen Golf Mark V and VI, Jetta, Passat and other similar models is reasonably straightforward with the introduction of new (albeit difficult and expensive to source) headunits. DAB and DAB+ are available on all models of the DAB RNS 510 headunits and will work in any country with DAB and DAB+.

The version tested to work here in Australia is the 1T0035686C  (1T0 035 686 C) with a Hardware Level of HW:09 and running software level 5238. This unit is a stock RNS 510 with LED screen, 40GB hard drive and is the latest available model from Volkswagen at the time of fitting in late 2013.

There is another version which is the 1T0035686D  (1T0 035 686 D) and the difference between them is that the C version has Western European maps installed and the D version has Eastern European maps. Be aware that the versions of firmware prior to 5238 are buggy.

You will need to fit a suitable DAB/DAB+ aerial to your car to pick up DAB/DAB+ signals, there is a new FAKRA connector on the rear for this signal and the existing aerials are used for FM and AM.

FAKRA (SMB) Connector Information and Specifications

FAKRA Connectors are designed for automotive applications and are based on the SMB connector interface and comply with the standard for a uniform connector system established by FAKRA (FACHARBEITSKREIS AUTOMOBIL – German group of experts from vehicle manufacturers and equipment suppliers). Due to their special standard locking system FAKRA connectors fulfill the high functional and safety requirements of today’s automotive industry and are specified for 6 GHz in 50 omh or 60 ohm. These connectors are commonly used in GPS antenna, Engine management system, Analog/Digital radio, Auxiliary heating, TV/Video-displays, Antenna, Distributor box, Accident data analysis, Mobile phone, Remote control keyless entry, Distance control, Air pressure control, and Navigation systems.

The connectors are equipped with a standardized coding system which permits easy and fast assembly using fourteen possible coding options. The locking system has primary and secondary locking to prevent inadvertent detachment.

The FAKRA standard is described today in the DIN 72594-1 / ISO 20860-1 and harmonized with the USCAR-17 standard and the goal is to transfer the DIN and USCAR standard into an international ISO standard. USCAR-17 is meanwhile replaced by ISO 20860-1 and the same will happen with DIN 72594-1.

  • Revision B and C units can be upgraded however there may be issues (A units may be upgraded but not recommended).

Revision B and C revision units

These units will become SW revision D after the upgrade however when coding the unit using VCDS you will receive the error
“Coding Rejected, Error 31: Request Out of Range”
Before saving the new coding manually add a 10th byte (00) at the end before pressing “Do It” as per the example below

9 byte coding (B/C SW revisions):
020104000400001100

10 byte coding (D SW revision):
02010400040000110000

Warning! This upgrade will not create the new partitions required for the new POI system if you upgrade from 1xxx/2xxx. Upgrading from 3800-3910 is required so the new partitions are created.

Warning! 7L6 Touareg RNS 510’s are no longer supported since version 3870 due to the Touareg being fitted with the RNS 850. Version 1200 was the last version factory loaded on the 7L6 units with a hardware revision B.

Warning! There is a remote chance of you ‘bricking’ the unit, this is a fraction of a percent but it could happen! The process takes around 60 minutes.’

Warning! There are a small number of users where the RNS 510 does not know where it is after it’s been powered on, details of the previous location are kept in the unit but at this stage there is no pattern to this problem.

Warning! There are a small number of users where the RNS 510 display has a dim backlight after upgrading. See the post “Volkswagen RNS 510 Backlight Dim after upgrading Firmware” for more details.

Warning! Users with cars MY07 and earlier may experience power drain issues after the upgrade. See the post “Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue” for more details.

Warning! Users with the Skoda UHV bluetooth 1Z0 035 729 B (1Z0035729B) may want to delay upgrading the firmware, there is an issue with the RNS 510 no longer displaying the phone book and/or the call details but signal strength etc are visible for some phones. A HTC Diamond for example worked fine before the update but only partially afterwards however an iPhone 3G worked fine before and after. This is not a problem with the 1Z0 035 729 D (1Z0035729D) Skoda UHV bluetooth kit. The MFD functions as per normal with phone book and last calls listed correctly. Android 2.1 phones work fine with the update.

Note! Test/Setup Mode. The firmware can allow access to enter test/setup mode without Vagcom/VCDS access see Accessing the Setup Menu on the RNS 510 head units with firmware later than 1100. The procedure for entering the test/setup mode for those with Vagcom/VCDS is slightly different as well. To enter the test/setup mode when the RNS 510 is operating press and hold the setup button, keep holding it when the radio menu appears and shortly after the test menu appears . I had to reboot my unit after coding it but it may be possible a power cycle is enough.

Note! Failure (Gateway Error 202) You can downgrade back to 1100 by inserting the 1100 firmware and rebooting the RNS 510 (Setup + eject + info).

General Notes

See Volkswagen Media Device Interface (MDI) Firmware Upgrades for general information on the firmware updates including restrictions, file formats and connectivity.

Firmware is for units with a software version of 0530 or greater, if firmware is unable to be updated or you have already flashed this version it will not load.

  • Download the firmware from one of the links below.
  • Extract the file using your preferred ZIP or RAR tool.
  • Copy the file mdi.bin.enc in the root (top) level of a USB flash drive and insert this into the USB cable.
  • Turn the headunit on or start the car and the update will proceed. If the MDI is selected the status will be displayed.
  • After around 1 minute the update will complete and the USB flash drive may be removed.
