Volkswagen Skoda Bluetooth Car Kit Install in Volkswagen Golf

VW / Skoda Bluetooth UnitVolkswagen in Australia and other countries offers a parrot car kit as their “OEM” car kit and don’t offer the excellent VW/Skoda fully integrated unit. The units are available from a number of sources in Europe and the US.

Wiring Harness

There are a few options here to connect the bluetooth unit to the factory harness behind the headunit.

  • purchase a fully built plug and play harness
  • build an inline adapter and connect to the harness that comes with the kit so you have a plug and play harness as above
  • use connector housings and repair wires to plug inline with the factory headunit harness
  • cut and splice (not recommended)

Plug n Play Harness

A problem with the Plug n Play harnesses is that they don’t have compliant CAN bus cabling which has to have a twist maintained throughout. The solution is to replace it with CAN bus repair wire.

This process involves joining the connectors to the harness and doesn’t involve adding bulky adaptors or cutting the harness.

Remove the two carpet squares that are premarked under the drivers seat using a small knife, don’t cut too deeply or you will cut into the paint on the sheet metal underneath. Insert the two plastic plugs and screw the bracket into place. Note that the bluetooth unit in this photo is upside down. Before you slide the unit in bend the metal bracket inwards so that it holds the unit tightly to prevent rattles.

Next remove the sill panel trim on the right hand side of the car, this only has to be removed for the front door and requires the clips to be removed so the edge of the carpet can be accessed.

The next step required the installation of the microphone.

Remove the dash vent (or tray on non Climatronic units) by following this guide.

Remove the trim around the head unit using this guide.

Remove the headunit by unscrewing the 4 screws and carefully sliding it out, watch out when the unit is released as it could drop and scratch the climatronic.

Release the cables from the rear of the headunit and put the headunit aside safely.

Upgrade Golf Headlights to Osram Nightbreaker

Upgrading to the Osram Night Breaker +90 in the Golf makes a reasonable difference to the throw of the lights and a substantial difference to the colour.

Osram claim up to 90% more light and up to 10% whiter light which from what I can see is pretty accurate.

The standard globes fitted to the Golf were reasonable but could certainly be improved, I would recommend taking optional bi-xenon lights where possible but unfortunately in my case I ended up having to settle for a car without them or face an additional 3-4 months delay.

It’s hard to show the difference the light makes in photos but you can see the difference in output and throw clearly when you’ve changed one globe. The comparative picture from Osram shows the difference between standard and the Nightbreaker +90’s.

Overall I would estimate the additional output/throw to increase the distance from which you can see to be around 20%.

These globes were purchased from Powerbulbs who offer free shipping worldwide.

At the same time I fitted the Philips BlueVision W5W globes to replace the parking lights which were quite yellow looking. These were included free with the order from Powerbulbs and make a big difference.

Volkswagen introduced it’s own specifications for engine oil in the mid 1990’s and these cover Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi and Seat made cars.

There are two new VW standards for oils, 504.00 for petrol powered engines and 507.00 for diesel powered engines. Introduced in late 2005, whilst these are seperate standards every oil made to date has meet the requirements of both standards. Hence why VW refer to the standards as 504.00/507.00.

All VW petrol and diesel engines with the exception of the Touareg R5 and V10 diesels with pump nozzles can use these new oils.

List of the most common VW standards

  • VW 500.00 – VW spec for multigrade engine oils for petrol engines with SAE 5W-X/10W-X viscosity for engines built up until August 1999 (MY 2000).
  • VW 500.00 + 505.00 – Oil meets both VW 500.00 and 505.00 spec.
  • VW 501.01 – VW spec for petrol engines for engines built up until August 1999 (MY 2000).
  • VW 501.14 – Brake fluid with low viscosity, VW 2006>.
  • VW 502.00 – VW spec, oil for petrol engines. Successor of VW 501.01 & 500.00 spec.
  • VW 503.00 – Long-life petrol engine oil for VW cars with WIV. Meets ACEA A1, SAE 0W-30 or 5W-30. Suitable for the AUDI S4, engines with an output greater than 180bhp should use 503.01 or 504.00/507.00.
  • VW 503.01 – Special engine oil for some VW petrol engines. SAE 5W-30. Suitable for the Ausi RS4, TT, S3 and A8 6.0 V12.
  • VW 504.00 – Long-life petrol engines with WIV.
  • VW 505.00 – Passanger car diesel engine oil, minimum performance level CCMC PD-2. Lists viscosities:- SAE 5W-50, 10W-50/60, 15W-40/50, 20W-40/50 requiring 13% max evaporation loss and SAE 5W-30/40, 10W-30/40 requiring 15% max evaporation loss.
  • VW 505.01 – Special engine oil for VW turbodiesel with pump-injector-unit and for the V8 commonrail turbodiesel engines. Meets ACEA B4 SAE 5W-40 spec.
  • VW 506.00 – Special long-life engine oil for turbodiesel engines with WIV, viscosity is SAE 0W-30.
  • VW 506.01 – Special long-life oil for turbodiesel engines with pump-injector-unit with WIV.
  • VW 507.00 – Long-life diesel engine oil with WIV.
  • VW 508.00 – Fuel economy low saps oil in development.

WIV is extended drain periods up to 30,000km or 24 months.

VW OIL Requirements (1998-2006)
