• Skoda units – see instructions below for keeping steering wheel buttons operational
• Seat units – No, the Hardware ID shows up as Skoda but if this is changed to VW the firmware will load and the Hardware ID can be changed back to Seat. There are no hardware definaitions for the Seat on the upgrade media.
• USA Firmware has yet to be released

Warning! This upgrade WILL delete your music and/or maps if you have a firmware version PRIOR to version 1100/1102. Units with a firmware version of 1100/1102 will not have music and maps deleted.

Warning! There is a remote chance of you ‘bricking’ the unit, this is a fraction of a percent but it could happen! The process takes around 60 minutes.’

Warning! There are a small number of users where the RNS 510 does not know where it is after it’s been powered on, details of the previous location are kept in the unit but at this stage there is no pattern to this problem.

Warning! Users with cars MY07 and earlier may experience power drain issues after the upgrade. See the post “Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue” for more details.

Warning! Users with the Skoda UHV bluetooth 1Z0 035 729 B (1Z0035729B) may want to delay upgrading the firmware, there is an issue with the RNS 510 no longer displaying the phone book and/or the call details but signal strength etc are visible for some phones. My HTC Diamond for example worked fine before the update but only partially afterwards however my Iphone 3G worked fine before and after. This is not a problem with the 1Z0 035 729 D (1Z0035729D) Skoda UHV bluetooth kit. The MFD functions as per normal with phone book and last calls listed correctly.

Note! Skoda owners (thanks to Ted)

1. Extract files PQTABLE and SKTABLE from image (use magiciso or ultraiso). Files can be found from path: \VUCI\B101\RNSMIDEC\PROG
2. Switch the filenames by just renaming SKTABLE to PQTABLE and vice versa
3. Overwrite the renamed files back to image and save the image. Burn this image to DVD or CD.
4. Load or reload the Firmware to your RNS-510 using the steps below.
5. Voilá… buttons are back!

Note! Test/Setup Mode. The firmware can allow access to enter test/setup mode without Vagcom/VCDS access see Accessing the Setup Menu on the RNS 510 head units with firmware later than 1100. The procedure for entering the test/setup mode for those with Vagcom/VCDS is slightly different as well. To enter the test/setup mode when the RNS 510 is operating press and hold the setup button, keep holding it when the radio menu appears and shortly after the test menu appears . I had to reboot my unit after coding it but it may be possible a power cycle is enough.

Note! Failure (Gateway Error 202) You can downgrade back to 1100 by inserting the 1100 firmware and rebooting the RNS 510 (Setup + eject + info).

Hi.

There is no mic. input in the back of my RNS510 so where to route the mic ?

Thank you in advance.

• wega3k

Any idea what causes the gateway error? I have this on mine. I get to 87% overall / 10% update on the gateway and it dies.

• cupra4

Shouldn’t below not be corrected as:

# 1Z0 035 680A (1Z0035680A) from software version 0522, 1002, 1022 and 1102 to version 2664.
# 1Z0 035 680B (1Z0035680B) from software version 0522, 1002, 1022 and 1102 to version 2664.

to

# 1Z0 035 680A (1Z0035680A) from software version 0524, 1004, 1024 and 904 to version 2664.
# 1Z0 035 680B (1Z0035680B) from software version 0524, 1004, 1024 and 1104 to version 2664.

1Z0 035 680A becomes 3T0 035 680B after upgrade.
1Z0 035 680B becomes 3T0 035 680B after upgrade.

Can somebody confirm this ?

• wega3k

I’ve tried downgrading without success. Same gateway 202 error.

• John

CD/DVD not recognised – ive tried 3 times with different media. I followed the instructions and not working. My unit is a 1T003568B SW900 HW03

• mar00ha

Just want to share my experience. I have successfully upgraded my 1T0035680C without any problems. You can compile that unit to Your list.
But I don’t know what SW version was before. Now there is 2660 in hidden menu “version info”.

• digital8

Can someone make a torrent or nzb of the firmware DVD please…

@ John.., try to adjust the way you burn the DVD, i had the same problems with the Maps DVD after changing some settings in ImageBurn (with i use to burn CD\DVD’s) the DVD did get recognized by my Columbus and i am able to navigate from that DVD.

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/489/burningcolumbusnavigati.jpg

• digital8

Of course i ment UltraISO nog IMGBurn but you got the idea….

• Ron

i have some trouble with the navigation after the update……
normally, even when parked in my garage, i see my position, but now it keeps saying off-road…….
when driving about 1 or 2 kilometers it finds the right position, so no problem but i want to know how come???
It started by a position in Germany…..

do you know??

• trolrolo

I have similar problem. After upgrade to 2662 from 1100 (Touareg 03.2009) unit 7L6035680C my compass is not working – it always shows North (0 degress) direction, and on the navigation, i’m always offroad. My position is ok and is changing when the car is moving. I have also a problem when I press button to enable automatic zoom (nothing happend), automatic zoom looks like not working.

• john

Thanks guys. I tried W7 ISO burner and 2660 fails. However I then burned FW 1100 using the same program and that worked. Its weird. Im trying again as MAYBE its due to the file that I edited extension being in lower case, who knows… im busy putting it back to 1100 so then afterwards ill try again with 2660. Weird that its not working!

• john

OK, one has got to write it using MOde 2/XA and not Mode 1. I also changed the extension in uppercase relating to the file that I edited. Not sure which one of the above worked though.

• greg

I burned using ImgBurn @ on DVD-R (@4x) and worked fine.
Maps appeared blank but after driving for a short while they displayed properly.

• john

thanks guys – its worked now with the above changes. Even when I had to write my nav disk to load it, it didnt work with Mode 1 but when written with Mode 2/XA it worked perfectly. Cool! Great site! Next up is the microphone for voice control. I havent tried the SDHC as I have H03, but lets see…

• Marcin

Thanks fot this info! Do you know if the waranty is void if I brick the unit?
And: in case I need to downgrade – how should I prepare the 1100 firmware disc?

• Maverick

If the unit is bricked you may not get warranty and it depends on how it fails and how you handle it with your dealer. Downgrading depends on how it failed and if you can access the test menu or not.

• chris spencer

Will this work on the seat unit as i am getting lots of different answers

• alex

I just upgraded my unit successfully, I did NOT loose and maps, MP3 or other data after the update

Before the update:
1T0 035 680 A (1T0035680A) SW version 1000. HW version H04

• HM1975

Following the firmware upgrade I noticed the Bluetooth issue 1Z0 035 729 B, but so far its only affecting my Blackberry Bold. My iPhone 3G and 3GS works and also my old Sony Ericsson works fine too. I am guessing something in the Blackberry firmware OS is not liking the VW upgrade. I might try loading version 5.0 onto my blackberry to see whether it helps.

• Ted

Okay upgraded my Columbus 1Z0 035 680A (1Z0035680A) from software version 1004 to version 2664.
1. Did not loose the maps, settings and music
2. Multifunction driving wheel buttons stopped working
3. Did not get the hidden menu even i did the mod to the file as informed

I´ll have to play with VCDS tomorrow if i can get those 2. -3. to work. Any other ideas?

• Morgan

I updated succsessfully at first try. I used Nero Burning Rom (Nero 8) on a Dell Inspiron Laptop with A Nec Burning CD/DVD-Rom. Burndes it as normal iso with 2.4 speed! Worked like a charm. Will take my beloved PAssat for a ride and see if system work as it is supposed to!

• Ceramicax

I need help with SEAT Unit.

I’ve read: “Seat units – No, the Hardware ID shows up as Skoda but if this is changed to VW the firmware will load and the Hardware ID can be changed back to Seat. There are no hardware definaitions for the Seat on the upgrade media.”

someone know how to do this???

• Ted

VCDS did not help shit to get the buttons back. Btw i have Octavia 2 from year 2005. Fortunately i got some usable information from vwnavi.com forum. Somebody has found out how to edit the fw-image to get the MF-buttons work on the driving wheel. Kudos to him! Here are the instructions: …the site seems to be down at the moment due to exeeded bandwith limit.

So this is what has to be done to get the multifunction buttons to work:

1. Extract files PQTABLE and SKTABLE from image (use magiciso or ultraiso). Files can be found from path: \VUCI\B101\RNSMIDEC\PROG
2. Switch the filenames by just renaming SKTABLE to PQTABLE and vice versa
3. Owerwrite the renamed files back to image and save the image. Burn this image to DVD or CD.
4. Load or reload the Firmware to your RNS-510 (I had to reload the edited image. Took about 40 minutes.)
5. Voilá… buttons are back and its about time to pop a six pack! =)

Also the hidden setup actually works. Found out that only the procedure how to get to it has changed. Now you dont have to reset the device. Just press the setup button long enough when the navi is on. Firs it goes to reqular setup–> then it goes to FM/AM setup –> and finally it goes to testmode setup.

Maybe these instructions should be added to the above text… so this wont come as a surprice to other upgraders.

…over&out

• Rob

This update has bricked by RNS510. Tried the downgrade cancel trick, no effect. Now it just stuck saying “Can’t boot, insert CD to update”. Stuck in SWL hell. Doesn’t held that vwnavi is down either (I presume until the end of the month) as I need contact details of repair people!

All I can say is unless you’re desperate for the new feature, I wouldn’t bother as the risk outweighs the reward.

🙁

• mr gee

I updated mine this morning using nero and magic disk to edit the WA folder.
Noticed that my hw02 had changed to hw04 and model 1TOxxxxB changed to 1TOxxxxC

mp3s stored in HDD still intact. Maps were blank so I just reloaded V2 and everything looks good. Noticed in setup mode, DAB button had disappeared but since I don’t have DAB, no issues noticed so far.

• […] currently only operates the volume buttons, might chnaging the F/W help? Yes… this comment here […]

• Rob

@Maverick: Yep. Tried CD-R and 2 typres of DVD-R on various speeds. I just get the ‘Library load failure’ and looking at cached topics from VWNavi, people have had to get a new motherboard.

• Leslie

I flashed the FW successfully for my euro RNS510 but I have lost the steering wheel controls (on the right) and the DIS support for my mk6. The buttons on the left still operate the radio/music tracks/vol. Has anyone used Ted’s solution for VW as well?

• […] Posted by simbo99 Yes… see this comment here Quote: So this is what has to be done to get the multifunction buttons to work: 1. Extract […]

• Argyris

Does anyone face power drain problems after the upgrade?
Me and two other frieds are facing this issue.

• rv65

Leslie,

It could be a coding issue. Download the latest VCDS and enable Byte 7, Bit 7 in Navigation – 37. This is BAP and it should solve your problem.

• Mougwai

Rob: I get the same issue, rns510 bricked… I made many reset and try several time to downgrade with 1100 firwmare.
After 15mn, I get the message FAILED TO DOWNGRADE, and the RNS510 restart correctly :)) now I have the latest firmware, and RNS510 works as expected !

I get this error :
http://dk6.ti1ca.com/get/82.225.141.104/747eyvgm/firmware-26082009144.jpg

http://dk2.ti1ca.com/get/82.225.141.104/srfspzda/firmware-26082009146.jpg

And after a downgrade:
http://dk6.ti1ca.com/get/82.225.141.104/zeb4yk/controlevocale-28082009173.jpg

I get the new firmware working very nice.

• Ted

Enabling BAB or MFSW did not help me …as i said earlier VCDS did not do the trick. Then again i have Octy 2 yearmodel 2005. You have mk6 so there propably is some differences. I would try wit VCDS first.

The original founder of the SQTABLE/PQTABLE switch trick has Touran yearmodel 2007 (i found this piece of info from vwnavi.com). So it seems to work also on some VW- cars. All i can say is that there is no guarantees, but imho its worth to try if nuthin else works. You can always revert back to original FW. Just not corrupt the image when editing… =)

• Tos

I just updated my friends navigation 1T0 035 680 B, SW 900.
Maps and music stayed in HD. 😀
I took a risk and it was that worth.

• Leslie

Somehow my Audio controls ‘came back’. At first i couldn’t see anything when stationary. Then I could see it when the car is in motion and now i can see it when the car is stationary. Weird….but i’m glad! Thanks for the help guys!

• patrick

really n00b question but how do you get the .nrg files from the 4 part download to “merge” together…

• Maverick

Open the first .rar file up in winrar and extract the .nrg file, it will automatically extract it from the other other three files and join it together. Just make sure all 4 are in the same directory.

• mr gee

Leslie

Can you elaborate on what you did prior to get back the functionality of your MFSW?
Mine’s a Mk 6 as well

• mr gee

I succeeded in recoding my RNS such that I have regained functionality for my MFSW
For those in the same boat, ie MK 6 / RNS 510. Here are my codes via VCDS release 908, channel 37 navigation : 04010400040000A200

From the short drive testing it, I have thru left buttons, vol, channel, mute and thru right buttons, nav and audio info on the DIS,

Hope this helps

• Chris spencer

There surely must be a way to up date the seat unit with this. Would it not be possible to not upgrade the mpeg part for the sd reader but update everything else???

• uk-Pedro

I’m having power drain issues after upgrade.

I’ve had the RNS510 installed for over 2 months now and after upgrading the firmware to the 2660 version my battery drained within 2 days. Might be a coincidence but I don’t think so.

I’ve read on here that the can bus doesn’t need to be upgraded if going from a second generation radio to the RNS 510 because it was available in 2007 but what about those 2006 cars?

• Maverick

The CAN bus doesn’t need to be upgraded for the RNS 510 on any Mark V as far as I know. If you car is a 2006 model and the battery hasn’t been replaced yet it will be due any time as 3 years is around the lifetime to expect. I suggest a battery test which should show if the battery is the problem.

• Noddie

Hi Guys
I have read this thread several times and i still can’t quite get it.
I have TDI MK6
I have installed the following Bluetooth Kit

3B0 035 711 B – Microphone
1Z0 035 729 D – Bluetooth Interface

I have on order rns510 1T0 035 680 B on order.
When I install this new firmware and provided I don’t ‘Brick’ the unit will the existing mic to the BT module provide voice control ?

Or do I need to parallel mic from BT to back of RNS510 on pins indicated. (I think this is what is being indicated)
Clarification would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & Regards
Darren

• uk-Pedro

Mav,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I should have said it is a 2006 Passat.
I disconnected the RNS510 this morning as my battery was flat again, boosted the car and drove to work. The battery charged fine and, 6 hours later, has just started the car 5 times, one after another, so seems to have charged and holds a charge.

I’ll try a battery test anyway just to put my mind at ease.

Cheers,
uk-Pedro

• Duske

uk-Pedro, I have a new battery bought in January 2009 and have the same issue. I suppose, we need to change the Gateway unit, it will solve the issue. Is your gateway unit “C” version? Temporally I’ve changed back the FW to 1100…till I will change the gateway.

• Andy

I have now get the same problem with flat battery. Its have to been a FW,because its was fine in FW 1100 and 1080 ore somthing I have before that. It was after I update to FW 2660?

Can some confirm that and will Volkswagen have a update FW so this issues been solved, they can not say to lots of customer that you have to change out your gataway. IT CAN not been that.

hope some can explain me this.

Cheers,
Andy

• Andy

Because it seem the unit not goes to sleep mode, that happend in FW 1100. so this must been a FW bugs, not need to change out all the gataway. It can not been that why.

anyone that have some more explain on this, why that happend in FW2660

Cheers,
Andy

• tsi rules!

hi people,

for those who are having trouble with Mougwai’s “downgrade to upgrade” method using the 1100 firmware, do try using the 1020 firmware.

step-by-step procedure can be found here:-
http://vwnavi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=43896&postcount=55

hope this helps!

• I tried. It was going along then said SW errorr and did a rollback…

any thoughts? did a 16 speed Nero CDR burn

• Derv

Having upgraded to firmware 2660, I can’t seem to get the clock display to turn on when the RNS510 is turned off with the ignition turned on. When I switch the power to the unit on, the clock display momentarily shows on the screen centre then it is replaced with the radio display.

Is there any particular setting that needs to be enabled to allow the clock display to constantly show with the RNS510 powered off?

• GOLFTDI

Anyone having problems where it shows km/h on the speed limit in map mode, when you really need mph (I am in UK) ? How do I change this?

Thanks!

• Stevies3

Just confirming, This update is not compatible with US versions of the RNS-510?
