Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue

Early build Volkswagen cars can experience a power drain issue after upgrading their 2nd generation headunit from a RCD 300 or RCD 500 to a 3rd generation headunit like the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510.

The problem is the CAN bus Gateway is too old and an updated version 1k0907530 (1k0 907 530) of L revision or higher is required – CAN bus gateway removing, installing and upgrading – Volkswagen Golf.

in vehicles belonging to the model series PQ35/PQ46 from
model year 2008 as well as the Tiguan,

Vehicles belonging to the model series PQ35/PQ46 from model year 2008 (MY08) as well as the Tiguan have gateways that are updated. Earlier models may require the updated CAN bus gateway to be installed. See Volkswagen Model Year Information for more details on the week of manufacture however generally Volkswagen change over Model Years around Week 22.

This problem does not* affect retrofits of the RNS 510 which is a 3rd generation head unit as this unit was in the production in 2007 whereas the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 are recent additions.

Check the ‘Skoda Parts’ link (right hand menu) for a reasonably priced gateway. Revisions that will work after the 1K0 907 530 S (1K0907530S) revision include 1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA), 1K0 907 530 AB (1K0907530AB) and 1K0 907 530 AC (1K0907530AC).

* This problem does now affect the RNS 510 if the firmware is upgraded to 2660 or higher. The RNS 510 will exhibit the same problems as the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 and requires the CAN bus gateway to be upgraded.

  1. Hello,

Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue:

    Two questions:
    – do you know what functions my VW dealer has to code in the CAN BUS for a WD6050 – the same as for an RNS-510?

    – if the CAN BUS is coded for the WD6050 does it have to be coded back for my original RCD 300 or will it be ok for the old unit, too?

    Thanks alot
    pluto

    1. The W6050 doesn’t have to be coded, you leave it as it is (an error will appear because there is no factory head unit but this can be ignored). This also means you can put your old headunit back in at any time.

  2. I have a gt TDI 04 mk5. I have bought an RNS-510 installed it and it has been fine until yesterday where myh battery was drained. What are my options? could i disconnect the CAN network from the radio? when i read the ECU it was moaning about the nav, should i do something so the ECU knows about it?

    1. On RHD cars you have to first remove the front wiper motor. Once that’s off, you remove the inspection panel behind it. The canbus gateway is right there.

      No idea on LHD, sorry!

  3. Is this only a issues when you have upgrade to FW 2660? because when I have 1100 and 1080 this problem was not there, and I have a golf 5 2006 model with a A version unit. Is this not a problem that will been solved in a update FW??

Volkswagen can not make a problem for lots of people in the world that seet on a old gataway because thay have update the FW in the unit?

    hope som answear here….

    =)

  4. New Can Gateway Part numbers

    1K0 907 530 T
    1K0 907 530 AA
    3C0 907 530 M
    3C0 907 530 N

The AA is under $200 at 1stvwparts.com if you want an affordable can gateway for your swap. The 3C0 is for the Passat cars.

    1. You’ll need a dealer tool or Vagcom/VCDS to do this. It’s straightforward and only involves copying down the existing values both in the installation list and the long coding.

      1. can you tell me how to code the RNS 510? After the instalation the the right part of steering wheel buttons are not functional and the red dots display isn’t connect whit RNS 510

  5. Hi,
the original car radio is RCD300 just turns off when the button on\off is turned off or when I remove the ignition key.
the unit I bought it is WD6050, the way this unit is working is if I want to be listening music in the car with the key in position 0(the ignition off) the unit will turn off, so that I always have the ignition in position 1 to listening music I have the dashboard always on.
So summarizing the only way the unit (WD6050) will working is the ignition key must always be in position 1, and so the dashboard is always on them will be a greater demand on battery power because I have the dashboard always on.

  6. Hello,

i have the problem that the reverse gear is not arriving in the RNS 510: before, i had a Kenwood Navigation System with a CanBus-Adapter, and the reverse signal was definitely recognized. But now, the RNS 510 / Columbus don´t find it, even with firmware version 0904, 1104, 1164…

    Any ideas???

  7. Hi,

I have the problem . I have changed the Gateway to revision L, loaded FW 2660, and now I have the batery drain problem on all FW 900/1100/2660(in 24 h its almost flat).
So it seems that only changing the Gateway to L does not solve the problem in some cars..
My car is a Passat 3C, MY06, with factory fitted parking sensors and Premium Bluetooh phone.
If anybody can give some light.

    Regards

    1. hey man-i have the same car and the same problem…but i didn’t yet by rev L. I was hoping that that would work-anyone?

    2. Hi Shocck, i have the same problem now with Gateway Q,same 2660 soft and same car with parking sensors, premium phone and cd changer.
      Have you solved this problem??

      Regards

  8. My Mk5 Golf has Can Gateway 1KO 907 530 F. Will this work with a RCD310 and not drain battery?

    Tks

  9. Hello,

Is it possible that an old Gateway 1K0 907 530L that conducts to power drain with FW2660, could also be the cause of not working steering wheel commands with a RNS510 Version C?

    Thank you,
    Cristian

  10. I have a Passat 2007 with an RCD300 and want to upgrade to a RCD310.
How do I find out if need a new CAN gateway ? (where to find it to look for version#)
Are there any other things to consider ? (Firmware v. of the radio or antennas etc.)

  11. Hi,
I have a 2007 Jetta MKV with gateway 1k0907530H. I upgraded from RCD300 to RCD510 and I have the battery drain problem. The dealer only has gateway 1K0907530T. Is the T version compatible with the JETTA and the RCD510 ???
    Thanks

  12. Does anyone know if you can code in a used gateway? They seem to be popping up on http://www.eBay.de at reasonable prices from crashed VWs and Audis, but I don’t want to buy an expensive paperweight. Thanks in advance!

      1. Perfect, thanks very much! Just found one from a crashed 09 MK6 base model (check the part number and its the S version) which is mine for £50 delivered.

On a side note, has anyone seen the “can bus converters” on ebay.de? They seem to go for around 150EUR but they’re simply a box with 2 looms, one with a quadlock connector, the other with a socket. They look like a good plug and play alternative for those without VCDS or coding experience.

  13. I have a September 2007 Build (MY08) GOLF GTI how can I confirm that this is from a model series PQ35/PQ46 from model year 2008 (MY08)??

    Cheers,
    Hash

  14. Hi Hash,

You would either need to physically find the canbus and locate part info, or find someone close to you with vcds.
Its an easy process with VCDS, literally only takes a min or two to get the part info. If you don’t know anyone with VCDS, perhaps you could contact your local dealer and get them to do it?

  15. Hi All,
I have a Tiguan from 2009 (Red screen) with a rns510. Which is the newest firmware that won’t drain my battery?

  16. Hi

  17. Any idea if a DVD based MFD2 with newest firmware would pose the drain issue on a MY05.5 Jetta? I have searched over and over and found no clear answer. thx!

    1. Hi Peter, we have a 2660 unit which we put in our ’07 Eos, with the L part number Gateway, and it took only 20 hours to drain the battery. So it looks like it needs updating mate

  18. Hi,
I have a 2007 Jetta MKV with gateway 1k0907530H. I upgraded from RCD300 non-mp3 to RCD510 and I have the battery drain problem. l have found 1K0907530AD. Is the AD version compatible with the JETTA and the RCD510 ???
    Thanks

  19. Hi,

RNS510 revision “B” here, upgraded to sw 2680, car is a Passat 3C MY09 and the gateway is “L”.
The power drain issue is alive.
In my town vw office they told me that the GW “newer” than mine isn’t compatible yet with my car and my RNS because they say that 1K0907530S (for example) may be been 3C0907530S that doesn’t exist.

    So, what can i do?
    Thanks in advice,

    Lele.

  20. I have a MY06 Passat with RNS 510 B fw 1200. Since upgrading the firmware I have the power drain problem. Now I understand that replacing the old gateway for a newer version that it is not sure that the power drain problem is fixed.

    Can anybody confirm this?

  21. I have a MY07 Eos and we had just replaced the CAN Gateway from a K to an AA unit. It has fixed our power drain problem for us.
The CAN Gateway in our RHD Eos was placed behind the interior relay panel, it wasn’t mounted or anything it was just sitting there. It took us a while to find it!

  22. Hi

  23. i have a 56 vw eos trying to fit after market MT6501 head unit sat nav, dvd so on i experience power drain after 24 hrs can any one help please?thanks in advance

  24. the can gateways that you talk about do they come programed or do they need this done by dealer?

    1. The dealer can do them after fitting or you will require a Vagcom/VCDS cable to do this. The gateway has to be coded after the gateway is changed.
