2 x 1K8 827 761 C (1K8827761C) – Scirocco bumpers

In Europe allow around €65 depending on the source, in the US the kit can be purchased from ECS Tuning. Australian pricing is around $300 through the dealerships so purchasing from Europe or the US is the way to go however freight can be expensive.

Tools required

VCDS or Volkswagen Dealer to perform the changes required

13mm spanner (an adjustable spanner can be used instead)

24mm spanner (an adjustable spanner can be used instead)

Small flathead screwdriver (#1 size)

3mm allen key

optional – Something to hold the hatch up (a broom, your head or similar)

optional – plastic safe grease

The parts required

Installation

The hatch needs to be supported for this part of the install so if you don’t have someone around to assist and you have a broom handy this can be placed in the handle area of the hatch and will hold the hatch up whilst you remove and replace the struts and ball pins as once a strut is removed it will fall on your head. If you don’t have a broom just make sure you have all the tools you require at hand and you can sit the hatch on your head whilst you work.

Removing the gas strut

Working on the hatch side insert the #1 flathead screwdriver into area shown (there is a small recess) and carefully lever the clip towards the end until it sits in place as shown in the second photo.

Pull the gas strut away from the pin to remove (a plastic trim removal tool can assist if it’s hard to remove).

The same process is repeated on the body side of the strut mounting.

Pull the gas strut away from the pin to remove (a plastic trim removal tool can assist if it’s hard to remove).

Replacing the ball pin

Using the 13mm spanner remove the ball pin from the hatch, this may be difficult to remove due to the paint holding it in place, using a sharp knife you could score the paint around the washer carefully to make it easier to remove and less prone to chipping or tearing at the paint on the hatch. I placed electrical tape on the spanner to make it a tighter fit and also stop the paint on the original ball pin from being damaged.

Unscrew the ball pin by hand once loose and clean up any raised loose pieces of paint around where the washer was sitting.

Install the new ball pin, you can see the new ball pin has a smaller washer but you can’t remove the washer from the other ball pin to use. To make it look like the old one you could spray paint the pin and the base.

The original ball pin and the one on the body had grease on them and I added a plastic safe grease to both after cleaning them.

Installing the new gas strut

Installation of the new gas strut is a reverse of the removal process. I found it easier to slide the clip back to allow the strut to clip on easier.

Removing the bumper

Using a 24mm spanner or adjustable spanner remove the bumper by rotating ~90 degrees and pulling it out.

Installing the bumper

The new bumpers are shown below, the lower one is adjusted to be fully extended and the upper one is fully retracted which is how it will be used on the Golf.

Insert the 3mm allen key into the end (make sure the bumper is locked first by pressing down on it and turning – the pictures above are of the bumper popped out and able to move up and down whereas the picture below shows the bumper locked into place) and turn counter-clockwise until it stops.

Push down on the bumper until it’s fully retracted and turn the allen key clockwise until it stops to lock it into position.

The bumper should now look like this, install into the opening, turn ~90 degrees to lock it into place and press downwards on the bumper and turn to unlock it so it is as shown in the second photo. The bumper can now be compressed and will assist in the initial opening of the rear hatch.

Gateway Upgrade

If installing a RNS 510 with a software version more recent than 1200 or any other 3rd generation head unit the CAN Bus gateway needs to be revision L or greater. The gateway version can be identified by checking with VCDS or physically checking the gateway.

Details on the issue – Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue

Replacement of the gateway – CAN bus gateway removing, installing and upgrading – Volkswagen Golf

Aerial Upgrade

The 3rd generation head units require both aerial connections to share the same housing, the 2nd generation aerial connections are separate connections. Depending upon the year there are two options available ranging from AUD$10 to AUD$40 to resolve this problem.

Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RNS 510, RCD 510) aerial adapter

Remove the headunit by unscrewing the 4 screws and carefully sliding it out, watch out when the unit is released as it could drop and scratch the climatronic.

Release the cables from the rear of the headunit and put the headunit aside safely.

Exit Vagcom/VCDS and reboot the RNS 510 by pressing the < and > buttons on the left side of the DVD slot and whilst holding them press the far right info button next to the dvd slot. The new colour scheme will not display until the unit is rebooted.

I’m not sure if there is a spare ground on the controller or if an existing one has to be used.

Interior fabric adhesive tape - Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses

Trim Removal Tools

Selection of heat shrink tubing (3-5mm), soldering iron/blowtorch, solder

Vagcom/VCDS to code the door (this can be done before or after the install)

Volkswagen Golf & Jetta Door Controller Information Mark V has information on the door controllers. This guide will be based on the install in my March 2008 build MY08 GTI.

Pin 14 is the 12v for the Door Warning Light for older controllers, at some stage Gen 3 controllers were used and pin 6. There are 18 pins and a 16 pin connector housing.

The rear doors are connected via LIN bus so are programmed slightly differently to the front doors by requiring an extra step in the Central Convenience Controller – 46.

Open the Central Convenience Controller – 46 and select “Coding”

Go to Byte 17 and enable Bit 0.

The second part of the programming is the same as for the front doors.

Open the door controller – In this guide Rear Right – 72 and select “coding”

Add 64 to the existing number to add on Door Exit/Warning Lights.

Enabling static cornering lights in the Volkswagen Golf Mark V (Mark VI is covered in it’s own guide) only requires a few changes via Vagcom/VCDS.

The cornering function works when your headlights are activated (either manually or via the RLS) under the following conditions

The indicator is activated either by holding it down or clicking it into position (not when comfort indicating)

The car is in P, N, D, S or Manual (not when in reverse)

The steering wheel is turned 85° from the straight ahead position.

The speed is under 50kph (once the car drops below this speed the light will activate and once it goes above this speed the light will fade off)

The fog light on the side of the car that the wheel is turned towards will light up, depending on the speed of the steering wheel the light will either fade in slowly or turn on instantly but the light will always fade out slowly.

You will need a 30 Byte Central Electronics Convenience Module (CECM) which are fitted to MY08′s models onwards.

Open Controller 9 and select Coding – 07

Click the Long Coding Helper, do not copy down the coding seen as these are specific to each car and it’s options/setup.

Select Byte 23 and bit 2, 3 and 4 need to be selected and the type of light chosen (Turn Lights via Fog Lights).

Once it looks like this select “exit”

Select “Do It!” to save the coding.

If the code is accepted select “OK”

Close the controller to finish.

To test the cornering light function turn the headlights on and turn the wheel left or right, the engine doesn’t have to be turned on. My boys were less excited about the cornering lights then I was.
