Enabling static cornering lights in the Volkswagen Golf Mark V (Mark VI is covered in it’s own guide) only requires a few changes via Vagcom/VCDS.

The cornering function works when your headlights are activated (either manually or via the RLS) under the following conditions

The indicator is activated either by holding it down or clicking it into position (not when comfort indicating)

The car is in P, N, D, S or Manual (not when in reverse)

The steering wheel is turned 85° from the straight ahead position.

The speed is under 50kph (once the car drops below this speed the light will activate and once it goes above this speed the light will fade off)

The fog light on the side of the car that the wheel is turned towards will light up, depending on the speed of the steering wheel the light will either fade in slowly or turn on instantly but the light will always fade out slowly.

You will need a 30 Byte Central Electronics Convenience Module (CECM) which are fitted to MY08′s models onwards.

Open Controller 9 and select Coding – 07

Click the Long Coding Helper, do not copy down the coding seen as these are specific to each car and it’s options/setup.

Select Byte 23 and bit 2, 3 and 4 need to be selected and the type of light chosen (Turn Lights via Fog Lights).

Once it looks like this select “exit”

Select “Do It!” to save the coding.

If the code is accepted select “OK”

Close the controller to finish.

To test the cornering light function turn the headlights on and turn the wheel left or right, the engine doesn’t have to be turned on. My boys were less excited about the cornering lights then I was.

This guide covers the installation of the puddle lights to the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta front doors as fitted in some countries and specifications of Mark V’s and to some models of the EOS. Along with the Door Warning Lights these really light up the area around the side of the car.

The light operates every time the door is operated and stays on after you close the door (longer than the coming home time) but turn off when you arm/lock the car. When you unlock the car they turn on and stay on longer than the leaving home time.

Adding puddle lights to the Volkswagen Golf or Jetta can be be achieved in two ways.

Purchase new mirrors with puddle lights fitted (estimated cost AUD$800/USD$400)

1K1 857 507 BT 9B9 – Driver’s Mirror, power, heated, puddle lights (MY06 Golf/Jetta)

1K1 857 508 BR 9B9 – Passenger’s Mirror, power, heated, puddle lights (MY06 Golf/Jetta)

Modify the existing mirrors to add a lense and suitable leds (estimated cost AUD$30/USD$25)

100 Lumen White Aluminium LED Module – USD $10.35 delivered worldwide (2 required)

36.7mm glass lens (10 pack) – USD $3.45 delivered worldwide (only 1 required as 10 in the pack)

000 979 018 (000979018) - Repair Wire (1 required for 2 doors)
not required if you are using the mirror heating wires

Exterior and Interior fabric adhesive tape - Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses

Trim Removal Tools

Selection of heat shrink tubing (3-5mm), soldering iron/blowtorch, solder

Vagcom/VCDS to code the door (this can be done before or after the install)

Volkswagen Golf & Jetta Door Controller Information Mark V has information on the door controllers. This guide was based on the install in my March 2008 build MY08 GTI.

First remove the door trim – Passengers Front Door Trim – Removal and Installation

The mirror cover – Removal and Installation of Mirror Covers from the Volkswagen Golf Mark V

And finally the mirror – Removal and Installation of Mirrors from the Volkswagen Golf Mark V

Extra cable to mirror

Adding extra cable to the mirror for the lights – this section can be skipped if you want to use the mirror heating cabling instead.

This is where the cable exits the mirror and enters inside the car.

This is the other end where the cable appears inside the mirror. Start by inserting the wire into the top and pushing inside.

The cable will be visible and you can fish it out with a suitable piece of wire.

Pull the wire through until you have almost enough to reach the controller. We need to wrap this cable next.

Using an exterior fabric adhesive tape – Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses – cover enough of the cable so that the part inside the mirror hinge and partway out each end is covered with two layers. This is especially important on the motorised mirrors that fold back.

Now pull the covered section through.

Leaving the uncovered section out like this.

Route the new cable as follows to follow the path of the existing cable.

And tape it to the existing loom.

This step identified Pin 10 as the positive power for the puddle light.

Insert the repair wire into the pin 10 position. Note. if you are using the mirror heater connection what you need to do is remove the pin from the mirror heater position and move it to pin 10.

Place a suitable piece of heat shrink tubing (3.5mm to 4.5mm) on the repair wire, bare the ends of the repair wire and new wire to the mirror and twist them together before soldering.

Now pull the heat shrink over the connection and apply heat to shrink.

Using an interior fabric adhesive tape - Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses – wrap the new cable onto the existing mirror loom.

Replace the Door Mirror

Now reinstall the door mirror – Removal and Installation of Mirrors from the Volkswagen Golf Mark

Fit the puddle light and lense to the mirror

Depress the clips on the rear of the mirror at the points shown and pull the frame towards you as shown by the arrows and it will slide off.

Undo the two torx screws shown to release the mirror indicator and the lower housing from the mirror (torx T10)

Once the indicator and housing are hanging depress the clip around the middle of the indicator and the two will separate.

Work out where you want the lense to be installed taking into account clearance at the front of the mirror for the mirror assembly, the frame we removed earlier and the height of the LED module.

Drill from the inside of the housing using a hole saw into some scrap timber (with paper towels on top if you don’t want to scratch the surface).

Next dremel around where the lense will go to increase the clearance for the LED module and to decrease the lip underneath the mirror housing.

Clean the surface with a suitable cleaner and apply some automotive silicone.

Push the glass into place and clean the excess off with mineral turpentine.

There will be a gap around the outside in which you fill with a 5 minute two part epoxy for strength. The silicone is mainly there for waterproofing plus the epoxy means after 30 minutes we can continue with the install. Remember to allow the silicone time to cure before you get it wet.

Fit the LED module into location and using 5 minute epoxy glue it into position, build the back up with double sided tape to provide mechanical strength.

The LED module glued into position.

Now reattach the indicator, route the wire (you will need to extend the stock wires, DON’T use the connector that came with it as they are useless and it will fail but instead solder the new ones and use heatshrink tubing) and check that the LED module is securely in place.

Removed the negative connection to the mirror and solder a wire to it and to the negative wire on the LED module before reattaching to the mirror. Use tape to connect the new wire to the mirror heater wire.

Note: If you are using the mirror heater wires for power detach the positive wire and solder a wire to it and the positive wire of the LED module but do not reattach the positive wire, instead pull it into the rear of the mirror and heatshrink it.

Most of the steps can be performed in any order (with a few exceptions). The wiring looms can be prepared in advance and details on how to build both the main wiring loom that links the camera to the RNS 510 and the camera in the hatch are being prepared. The hatch loom will include all measurements.

There is an alternative camera that is a third of the price of the auto opening camera, it hooks up in the same way but can be mounted in the rear bumper (under the lip over the number plate) or inside the rear glass. The part number is 5K0 980 551 (5K0980551)

Removing the rear lid trim panel

Removing the rear trim requires the use of a fair bit of force, the following guide gives a good idea however remove the two panels for replacing the reversing and foglight bulbs as this allows you to see where the clips are.

Installation of new badge with camera

Modifications to the sheet metal in the rear hatch and the rear wiper assembly are required to fit the Mark VI RVC. Either an angle grinder or a dremel is required to perform this work and something to protect the exposed metal edge like a rust primer.

The differences between the old and new are highlighted below.

Removal of excess sheet metal

As the photo below shows the new badge and how it intrudes into the area with the threaded post sticking out of the sheet metal. To enable this to fit we need to cut away the excess sheet metal.

First mark out the area to be cut, the example shown is actually not wide enough and had to be recut. The measurements for the cutout are 60mm horizontal and 55mm vertical. A dremel with a cutoff wheel performs the cuts in less than a minute. Use a suitable grinding stone on the dremel to round off the cut and to remove any sharp pieces of metal. A lot of fine metal particles are created with the cutting so I attached some papertowels in a U shape under the badge which caught most of them.

Installing the drainage

Install the drainage tube requires widening the hole in the rear of the hatch.
Cable is a Bacar(R)588-2 / 10712189 – no specs found

The power cable is not long enough for this application and needs to be extended, for consistency and future fault finding the cable should be extended in the middle by inserting a ~1.5 metre lengh of cable of around ~1mm size capable of carrying 5 to 7.5 amps.

On the camera end there should be around 20 cms of power cable going past the end of the connector (the spade connector on the end of this power cable can be removed) and on the RNS 510 end the wrapping should stop at around 80 cms and around 50 cms of power cable should be left free to enable connection to the fuse box.

Extending the power cable

Extending the cable in easy, twist the wires as shown after placing suitably sized heat shrink tubing on the wire, solder and shrink wrap.

Wrapping the power cable and the video cable

Wrapping the two cables together is strongly recommended to protect the cables during their installation, to make future fault finding easier and make a neater installation that looks OEM.

Installing the loom between the camera and the RNS 510.

Due to the length of the cable it’s best to remove all the trim in one go so the cable can be positioned correctly, the cable runs down behind the RNS 510 and under the drivers steering wheel, down the A pillar, along the door sills, up alongside the seats and over the rear wheel arch, up a opening into the C pillar where the rear windscreen wiper fluid travels, through the conduit into the hatch and to the rear camera. Not all of this is covered in this install guide for example headunit removal and installation.

RNS 510

Remove the RNS 510 and plug the single 26 pin into the RNS 510 as shown, reinstall the RNS 510.

A Pillar

Remove the lower A Pillar trim and route the cables up and across to the rear of the RNS 510.

Door Sills

The door sills don’t need to be removed but only lifted to allow access to run the cable.

Volkswagen Golf Sill Panel Trims – Removal and Installation

C Pillar

Pull back the C pillar trim at the rear of the car enough to allow you to see the openings, there is no need to remove the airbag tag and unscrew it as was done here. Using some stiff wire or yellow tongue (stiff yet pliable plastic rod used by electricians to run cables through walls, ceilings etc) to penetrate into the cavity behind the tail light (pull the carpet out as you were replacing a bulb and this will give you enough room to route the cable. In the photo following you can see a black wrapped tube that runs into the hatch area, route the cable via the same penetration.

Conduit

First remove the plug surrounding the connector on the end of the cable, after this has been removed bend carefully the power wire and tape it down back over it’s body to prevent damage when running through the conduit. In the first photo a small lug can be seen on the left side, lift this up and slide the connector out.

The conduit can easily be removed by pulling the top one out (gently) and for the bottom one pushing the bottom side up towards the roof of the car causing the clip to unhook, once this is unclipped the cable can be pushed through reasonably easily. Passing the cable through can be made easier if you use masking or electrical tape to remove the sharp edges of the connector. Ensure that both ends are refitted tightly to prevent any leaks.

Hatch

Volkswagen Golf Rear Lid Trims – Removal and Installation

Remove the trim around the rear window paying particular attention if you have window film, there are three clips on the side which come off by pulling from the lower edge up (down as it’s upside down) towards the top of the glass. Once the three clips have popped you can pop off a few more that run along the top of the window to give you room to work, around 2/3rds of the clips across the top of the window provide enough room to work.

Run the loom with the existing cable by taping it to the two fixing points (white clip in strips) and put the trim back in place.

When retrofitting a RNS 510 into a vehicle with a factory amplifier coding is required to drop the “output stage power 26 dB” to “output stage line-out 12 dB”. Poor sound quality and other problems will occur if this coding is not performed, the easiest way to see that the coding has not been performed correctly is that the fader option does not work for front/rear operation.

To make the chances you will need a dealer tool or Vagcom/VCDS. This guide covers the use of Vagcom/VCDS.

Open controller 37 – navigation and click on coding – 07

Click Long Coding Helper

Byte 1 select Bit 01 – Volkswagen Sound System.

This is the standard amplifier used in many Volkswagen cars, this changes the outputs from High to Low.

Byte 2 select Bit 00 – Sound System (active Speakers)

Byte 4 select Bit 01 – Speaker Monitoring Inactive (Sound System)

This turns off the speaker monitoring, the amplifier which is driving the speakers is performing this task and will report any problems with the speakers. If there is no amplifier the headunit does this checking.

Byte 5 select Bit 00 – Equalization: Linear

Exit the long coding helper and save the changes. The RNS 510 doesn’t require a reboot and should start sounding better.

Another change that can be beneficial is changing the loudness, this can be performed by entering the test mode.
