Precise and powerful lines from front to rear of the vehicle combine to create a sporty and dominant compact SUV.

The Tiguan model range is now bolstered with a completely new and exciting proposition – the entry model now heads the line up with the much awarded, responsive yet efficient 1.4 litre 118kW twincharged TSI petrol engine with the inclusion of BlueMotion Technolgy to optimises fuel savings. The engine is mated to the 6 speed manual transmission with power delivery driven through the front wheels. This offers an amazingly affordable and extremely competitive price point model in a fast growing area of the segment without sacrificing equipme125TSI rent or comfort levels. A future front wheel drive DSG model is also in the initial planning stages to further enhance our competitiveness in this sector.

The outgoing 125TSI has been replaced by the improved and upgraded 132TSI with 132kW, 2.0 litre petrol engine delivering exceptional drivability and complimented with impressive fuel efficiency. The diesel model 103TDI has been injected with improvements including BlueMotion Technolgy for added economy.

To complete the range, the 155TSI with DSG combines style, elegance, practicality and heightened specifications as well as added performance from the 2.0 litre 155kW turbocharged engine over its 147KW predecessor.

The below table outlines the model line.

Model Code - Model Description – Drive
5N20QX/12 - Tiguan 118TSI 6 speed manual - Front wheel drive
5N20N2/12 - Tiguan 132TSI 6 speed manual - 4MOTION
5N20N9/12 - Tiguan 132TSI 7 speed DSG - 4MOTION
5N203U/12 - Tiguan 103TDI 6 speed manual - 4MOTION
5N203R/12 - Tiguan 103TDI 7 speed DSG - 4MOTION
5N22M9/12 - Tiguan 155TSI 7 speed DSG - 4MOTION

Equipped as standard across the range is the convenience of Bluetooth connectivity and Media Device Interface (MDI) allowing you to listen to your favourite tracks or make that important call during any drive or commute.

Customers will be offered a simplified but concise factory option list – To highlight some of the key options, the 18” inch New York alloy wheels enforce the sporty stance of the Tiguan and matched with the additional front fog lights complete the essence of style. Improving visibility and visual appearance, is easily gained with Bi-Xenon headlights with LED driving lights. The Adaptive Chassis Control option gives you the choice of three different driving settings to suit your driving demands. Park Assist 2 will be offered for the first time across the Tiguan range and with the incorporation of front and rear parking sensors will assist greatly to reverse or bay park with ease. The interior can be optioned with Vienna leather appointed seats and complimented with the additional Comfort Package to include dual zone climatronic air-conditioning, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers and interior ambient lighting details. The complete list of options are detailed in the attached new Tiguan Information summary.

Tiguan 132TSI Pacific Special Model

Due to the extraordinary global demand of the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) a Tiguan Special Model (Tiguan 132TSI Pacific, automatic and manual) will be introduced and substitutes the Tiguan 132TSI DSG and Tiguan 132TSI 6 speed manual. This special model will be orderable from November 2011, (calendar week 45/2011). As a consequence the Tiguan 132TSI DSG and manual variant will not be orderable for production until mid-2012.

The Tiguan 132TSI Pacific special model will be identifiable with Pacific badging at the rear of the vehicle and is available in manual or alternatively as a 6 speed (conventional) Tiptronic automatic gearbox. This special model will include a host of additional features at no additional recommended retail price to the customer. Both the manual and automatic variants include, the Comfort Package, Front Fog Lights, and Park Assist 2. The addition of these key features adds $2,800 worth of value to the customer as well additional sales opportunities. Please see the below special model information:

Tiguan 132TSI Pacific

Model Code - Model Description - Drive
5N20N2P/12 - Tiguan 132TSI Pacific 6 speed manual - 4MOTION
5N20N3P/12 - Tiguan 132TSI Pacific 6 speed Tiptronic automatic - 4MOTION

We believe the new Tiguan is an extremely competitive Compact SUV in its class with compelling, comfort, style, safety and affordability. A detailed summary of specifications, colours and options is available to you in the attached document. Pricing will be announced and dealer pricing distributed at the time of launch, which is currently scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011.

These vehicles are visible on your code in NADCON. The new Tiguan will shortly be available to order through NADCON Configurator.

Current high levels of demand globally for the new Tiguan are presenting some challenges with production. For this reason to secure the maximum available production quota, we will be prescriptive with the fairshare offer mix until calendar week 21/2012, at which time this will be reviewed.

*We are currently not able to release the Tiguan 132TSI Pacific special models for ordering or the NADCON configurator. Due to this, the Tiguan 132TSI DSG and manual are now available to configure. Please keep this in mind that even though these vehicles are configured as 132TSI DSG & manuals, they will be produced from calendar week 45/2011 or later and will be built as 132TSI Pacific special models with the inclusion of additional features and the automatic gearbox.

Changes common to all models

1. Change in background colour for RCD210 and RCD310. The display colour for the RCD systems
is upgraded to match the instrument cluster.

Changes common to Caddy GP series

1. Engine compartment painting in body colour

Progressively from week 34 2011 the engine compartment in all Caddy models will no longer be painted
in body colour.

2. Change in function name with Climatronic air-conditioning system

The function DUAL has been renamed SYNC on the climatronic air-conditioning unit.

3. Caddy 4MOTION

As discussed at the launch of the Caddy GP range in 2010 we will add 2 models in the Caddy range incorporating 4MOTION technology. Firstly we will offer the Caddy Maxi TDI320 4MOTION 6 speed DSG Van and secondly we will offer the Caddy Maxi Life TDI320 4MOTION 6 speed DSG.

Both vehicles will have the same specification and ground clearance as their equivalent TDI320 Model with the addition of the multifunction display (9Q5) as a standard item. Production of these models will be limited in volume for quarter 3 2011 and will increase over time depending on demand from the network.

The Caddy 4MOTION allows customers the benefits of all-wheel drive technology in a similar way to the Transporter and Multivan 4MOTION variants. New model specification sheets and pricing will be advised soon.

Changes common to T5 GP series

1. Completion of naming convention change

As introduced on Caddy and Amarok, the naming convention for Commercial Vehicle models will now reflect our strong torque which suits perfectly the operating conditions for Commercial Vehicles. As such engine variants will be expressed as TDI400 – being engine type, followed by peak torque output.
This change affects all T5 models. For example, Transporter 103TDI becomes TDI340.

2. Lower position of badges on rear of all models

This change brings the badge position into line with Amarok and Caddy GP models – for all T5 GP models.

3. Trailer Preparation

All T5 models will now be standard with Trailer Wiring Preparation, similar to Amarok. This is a fantastic change, cutting fitting time substantially for the Accessories towbar and wiring kit. This change should give you confidence to promote the excellent 2-tonne towing capacity for all T5 models. The
fitment of the trailer preparation also brings Trailer Stabilisation as part of the ESP for T5 models.

4. SAFE Locking

A change has been made to show a warning for the SAFE locking (dead lock mechanism). This warning will now appear on the display of the instrument cluster when the key is removed for T5 models warning that the vehicle will be deadlocked when locked (unable to be open from the inside).

Translated, the warning says “Please consider the Safe Locking system, more information in the owner’s manual”.

5. DSG Logo on Gearstick

The DSG logo will move from a plaque on the base of the gear shift, to an embossed logo on the gear stick as per the image.

6. Package Code (Z1H) – Bluetooth

The package code Z1H is introduced for all T5 models, covering the options 9ZU and 9Q5. Z1H can only be ordered with ZE7.

Changes specific to Transporter

1. Change in tool kit for Single/Dual Cab Chassis

A revised tool kit is supplied for the Single/Dual Cab Chassis models. The equipment retains the same function.

2. Deletion of 103TDI Transporter Dual Cab Chassis

The model Transporter Dual Cab Chassis 103TDI is deleted.
With this change the entry level chassis model is the Single Cab TDI340 (formerly 103TDI) and the entry Dual Cab Chassis is the TDI400 (formerly 132TDI).

3. Design/location of the tie down points for vehicles fitted with a high partition wall (ZZ3)

Following a change to international regulations affecting the vehicles fitted with a high partition wall, reinforced load securing points are fitted to those vehicles. The position is changed for LWB vehicles. This only affects vehicles ordered with (ZZ3).

4. Park Distance Control (front and rear) now available without Body Coloured Bumpers

The PR codes 7X2 (front and rear parking sensors) and 7X8 (front and rear parking sensors with Rear View Camera) no longer force body coloured bumpers. This has the additional benefit of no longer restricting colour choice when optioning front and rear parking sensors for Transporter.

5. Package Code change for Side Assist (Z1Z changes to P1Z)

The package code has changed, all functionality for SWB Transporter with Side Assist remains as before.
This change is only for Transporter, Multivan retains the Z1Z code for Side Assist. There is also a reduced price for this option (both P1Z and Z1Z).

6. Confirmation that High Roof/LWB combination NOT available with 4Motion

7. Replacement of seat option packages with individual options

The package codes for Comfort Seats will change to individual option codes, allowing customers the option to add height adjustment and lumbar support without optioning arm-rests. ZS4 and ZS6 (Driver’s and Driver/Passenger arm rests, height adjust and lumbar support) are now split as below:

Previously part of ZS4 (only available in the combinations below)
3L2+7P6 Height adjustment for driver separate seat in cab and Lumbar support (manually adjustable) for separate seat, in cab, driver (only available as the combination)
3L2+7P6+4S3 As above, plus Armrests for drivers seat in cab

Previously part of ZS6 (only available in the combinations below)
3L3+7P4 Height adjustment for driver and passenger separate seat in cab and Lumbar supports (manually adjustable) for separate seats in cab, driver and passenger
3L3+7P4+4S1 Height adjustment for driver and passenger separate seat in cab and Lumbar supports (manually adjustable) for separate seats in cab, driver and passenger and armrests for both seats in cab

Changes specific to Caravelle

1. Option of Alarm with back-up horn and interior monitoring (ZF5)

This option has now been extended to Caravelle. The Alarm with back-up horn package is the same as for Multivan. In particular this means the Caravelle comes with two remote keys only and no third rigid key.

2. Park Distance Control (front and rear) now available without Body Coloured Bumpers

The PR codes 7X2 (front and rear parking sensors) and 7X8 (front and rear parking sensors with Rear View Camera) no longer force body coloured bumpers. This has the additional benefit of no longer restricting colour choice when optioning front and rear parking sensors for Caravelle.

Changes specific to Multivan

For MY12 there are some exciting changes for Multivan, building on the successful product offering in place. A new engine, refreshed wheel range and detail equipment and trim changes all help to maintain a strong offer in this segment and continue the success in 2011.

1. TSI350 Engine available in Multivan Comfortline and Highline (SOP still to be confirmed, will be from September at least)

During MY12 we will introduce the Multivan TSI350 petrol engine. This engine produces 150kW /350Nm and offers exceptional performance, driveability and economy. The engine has an extremely flat torque curve with strong performance throughout the range. Start of Production has not yet been
confirmed however a separate bulletin will follow with further information.

The TSI350 gives the Multivan strong acceleration, from 0-100km/h in just 8.7 seconds (compared to 10.5 seconds for the previous 3.2 V6). Compared to the 3.2 V6 the new TSI350 is 25.2% better in terms of fuel consumption and 26.7% better in terms of Co2 output (international figures).

The TSI350 model will be specified like the MY11 132TDI (now known as the TDI400).

2. Bi-Xenon Headlights (PXR)

Bi-Xenon headlights are now available as a stylish and functional option for Multivan Comfortline and Highline. Both high and low beam are
operated by the Bi-Xenon lights and Daytime Running Lights are a distinctive LED design. Headlight washers are included.

3. Dash Trim Upgrade

Adding to the comfort and appearance of Comfortline and Highline models, a new dash trim is now standard. The new trim incorporates stainless-steel look for air-vents and centre stack, as well as a chrome embellishment on gear lever and headlight switch. New mats in the dash storage pockets
complete the upgrade.

As per the change for all T5 models, the gear lever is embellished with the DSG insignia, rather than the base of the gearshift previously.

4. iPhone, iPod integration standard for Multivan (9WE)

Multivan will continue to come standard with the MDI system with RCD310 (CL) or RNS510 (HL). MDI will now be standard with iPhone/iPod interface. Interfaces to suit USB or other systems available via accessories. This change suits the family and leisure orientation of Multivan. Note that 9WE will appear
on the configurator for Multivan Comfortline as a ‘No Cost Option’.

5. New ‘Cascavel’ 17” alloy wheel for Multivan

This distinctive new alloy wheel is standard for Multivan Comfortline TDI400 (previously the 132TDI) and TSI350. It is available as a factory
option for Multivan Comfortline TDI340 (Previously 103TDI).

This wheel replaces the Neva 17” alloy wheel, no longer available.

6. Multifunction Steering Wheel (ZE6)

The Multifunction steering wheel (ZE6) with audio control is now standard in the Multivan Comfortline.
The Multifunction wheel (ZE7) with Bluetooth controls will continue to be available as an option. The wheel (ZE7) forces Bluetooth preparation package (Z1H).

Changes specific to Amarok

After great feedback from the media and public, there are only detail changes for the Amarok range. There is also the addition of the “Chassis” models for MY12, offering increased opportunity in the rural and heavy duty markets.

1. Multifunction Steering Wheel (ZA9 / PA9)

Multifunction steering wheel will now come standard on Highline and Ultimate models and will be an option on Amarok and Amarok Trendline.
The ZA9 wheel offers remote control for audio functions. Further information related to phone controls will follow.

2. Heated Seats for Ultimate

Heated seats will become standard for Ultimate. The switches are located on the centre console (above the buttons on the left and right side of the
gear shift). Note that the image shows the 4×4 adjustment on the left hand side, this remains on the right hand side for Australia.

3. Day Time Running Lights (from week 8/MY11 production)

This change has taken place early, forced from week 8/MY11 for all Australian production vehicles. Day Time Running lights operate in a similar way to the other models in the range with the benefit of increased visibility and safety.

4. Amarok Dual Cab Chassis (ZFA) / Trendline Dual Cab Chassis (ZFB)

Opening up a new opportunity for Amarok especially for rural and heavy duty use, MY12 sees the introduction of the chassis model Amarok – in both entry and Trendline.

For obvious reasons chassis models arrive without any rear badging (normally mounted to the tray) and there is no longer a rear 12V socket in the tray area. Mudflaps are also not fitted to the rear, but will instead be transported with the vehicle awaiting fitment with the tray.

Like the Transporter chassis models, the vehicle cannot be registered as delivered, the additional body (including rear tail lights, number plate lights and fuel-filler mounting) must be added prior to registration and by dealership/customer arrangement.

The comfort suspension is not available with Dual Cab Chassis models.

5. Amarok Ultimate: Change to decorative seam for armrest

The decorative seam is deleted for MY12 vehicles.

The new option of Keyless Access is now available. The retail price for the Keyless Access option is $900 (ordering code 4F2)

The engine is started (or switched off) simply by pressing the starter button located on the steering column.

The locking process is just as simple. One press on the button located in the exterior door handles activates the central locking. Should the key have been left inside the vehicle by mistake, the system will refuse to lock the vehicle.

Additionally, the Keyless Access option for Eos features the ability to open and close the CSC roof by remote control.

By standing close by the Eos (within approximately one metre) the roof can be remotelyopened by pressing the unlock button once to unlock the car and then within a couple ofseconds pressed and held until the roof has opened fully. Similarly, to remotely close the roof, press the lock button once to lock the car and then again press and hold the button until the roof has completely closed. An audible signal will be heard when each operation has completed.

Keyless Access offers the driver the ultimate convenience and maximum security.

There are no changes to Passat CC model or option recommended retail prices with the increased level of features and technology

Brake Energy Recuperation technology for both the 125TDI and V6 FSI

The energy released when braking or coasting is converted back into electrical energy and used to charge the battery.

Brake energy recuperation saves and stores the energy and uses it for starting and acceleration. The alternator load is thus reduced in acceleration phases. This relieves the burden on the engine and reduces fuel consumption.

Enhanced Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with “stop and go”

If the traffic situation necessitates that the car be braked to a standstill, when the traffic moves on, the driver can now reactivate the ACC functionality by tapping the accelerator pedal

Front Assist with City emergency brake (City EB) function
(Front Assist with City EB works independently from the status of the ACC)

New Functionality

Active brake interventions to reduce the collision speed

On a shock absorber test stand, the system receives information neither from the vehicle level senders, the body acceleration sensors nor wheel speed information.

DCC Adaptive Chassis Control

The rule for suspension systems has always been that increasing sportiness compromises the ride. In this new system – the DCC adaptive chassis control, the suspension constantly adjusts itself to the road conditions, the driving situation and the drivers requirements.

Adjustable shock absorbers are required to make this possible. The steering assistance is also adjusted in addition to the damping.

Basics of the damping system

The shock absorbers have the task of quickly reducing the vibration energy of the body and road wheel oscillations.

Suspension configuration

The compression cycle and extension cycle are features of the suspension. The damping force in the compression cycle is normally lower than in the extension cycle.

The shock absorbers prevent the body rocking due to bumps in the road and stop the wheels bouncing out of control on the road surface. Furthermore the body is also stabilised by the damping forces during

dynamic manoeuvres.

An even greater damping effectiveness is achieved with adjustable shock absorbers since the current driving situation can be taken into consideration more efficiently. The electronically controlled damping control unit determines within milliseconds what level of damping is required at which wheel and adjusts the shock absorber accordingly.

The damping level is the rate at which the vibrations are reduced. This is dependent on the damping force of the shock absorber and the size of the sprung masses.

Reducing the sprung masses increases the damping level.

Adjustable shock absorber

An adjustable shock absorber using a twin-tube design is employed for the DCC adaptive chassis control. The piston runs in chamber 1 and there is an additional gas chamber in chamber 2.

Function in extension and compression cycle

Check valves on the piston and base plate cause the oil to flow in the directions shown in the diagram during extension and compression.

The oil is fed to the adjustment valve through the ring channel and it flows in the same direction (uniflow) during extension and compression. The oil flows back into chamber 2 from the adjustment valve.

The adjustment valve determines the pressure in chamber 2 and thus the damping.

The cylinder contains chamber 2.

It is only partly filled with oil. There is a gas cushion with a de-foaming spiral above the oil filling. Chamber 2 is used to compensate changes in the oil volume.

The oil flow is controlled by the damping valve units on the piston, on the chamber base and in the adjustment valve. They consist of a system of flat springs, coil springs and valve bodies with oil flow ports.

During the extension cycle, the oil flow is controlled by:

Map for Adjustable shock absorber

Compared with a conventional shock absorber with fixed map, the adjustable shock absorber has an adjustable characteristic curve within a map.

Conventional shock absorbers have a characteristic curve that helps define the driving properties of the vehicle.
Defining this characteristic curve is the result of the suspension configuration that is carried out for each vehicle. This depends, among other things on the weight distribution of the vehicle, the engine, the vehicle characteristics and the axle kinematics.

The damping characteristic curves of the adjustable shock absorber can be modified by varying the current supplied to the adjustment valve. This creates a map.

This adjustment is made in all driving modes (“Normal”, “Sport” and “Comfort”).

Depending on the current driving situation, the shock absorber rates are adjusted within the specified map even when a driving mode is selected.

In “Fail Safe” mode, the adjustment valves are not powered and the shock absorbers are thus operated with a defined characteristic curve.

System description

DCC adaptive chassis control system

The adjustable shock absorbers are regulated by a control unit that adjusts the damping according to a control algorithm developed by Volkswagen. Depending on the input signals, the whole map of the adjustable shock absorbers is used. This control algorithm can also be switched from “Normal” mode to “Sport” or “Comfort” mode using the button and thus adjusted to customer requirements.

The system can be adjusted when the vehicle is stationary or travelling.

The DCC adaptive chassis control is always active. It is an intelligent automatically controlled system that adjusts the vehicle shock absorbers depending on

the road surface,

the respective driving situation (e.g. braking, accelerating and cornering) and

the driver’s requirement.

Thus the driver always has the ideal suspension setting.

Notes:

The driving mode last activated is also still active after the ignition is switched OFF/ON.

The driving mode can be switched over while the vehicle is stationary or on the road.

The adjustment valves are not powered when the vehicle is stationary.

Selectable DCC modes

The DCC mode can be set by the driver depending on individual requirements using the button to the right of the gear lever. Press the button until you obtain the required setting. You can repeat this as often as required. The modes are always switched through in the order “Normal” — “Sport” — “Comfort”.

Normal mode

“Normal” mode is active when neither the “Comfort” nor “Sport” labels on the button are illuminated yellow.

This setting provides an overall balanced, but still dynamic driving feel.

It is well suited for everyday use.

Sport mode

This mode is active when the “Sport” label is illuminated yellow in the button.

This setting gives the vehicle sporty handling with a harder basic configuration. The steering is also set sporty and the chassis damping is stiffer.

This setting allows a particularly sporty driving style.

Comfort mode

This mode is active when the “Comfort” label is illuminated yellow in the button.

This setting leads to a comfort-oriented, softer basic configuration of the chassis damping.

It is suitable, for example, for driving on bad roads and for long journeys.

The differences in the modes are noticeable from the varying hardness of the basic damping settings. They are superimposed by higher damping force requirements due to the driving situations.

Function

Shock absorber for DCC adaptive chassis control

Twin-tube shock absorbers are used for the DCC adaptive chassis control. An electrically controlled adjustment valve mounted on the outside of the shock absorber regulates the damping force.

By varying the current, the damping force of the active shock absorber setting can be adjusted within a few milliseconds by the adjustment valve.

The 3 vehicle level senders provide signals that are required to calculate the necessary shock absorber setting together with the signals from the 3 body acceleration senders. The maps for the respective shock absorber setting are stored in the electronically controlled damping control unit J250.

In the diagram, the ammeter is shown simply to help explain the current supplied to the adjustment valve (ammeter in “Normal” mode).

A fixed current is not used to control the system within the “Normal”, “Sport” and “Comfort” modes, instead a range of values are used (see yellow-coloured area in ammeter).

The following diagrams for the possible adjustment valve modes simply show the centre position of the ammeter needle within the yellow-coloured area.

Adjustment valve

The adjustment valve is mounted on the side of the shock absorber so that oil from the shock absorber ring channel flows to the valve. The oil supplied from the adjustment valve is sent to chamber 2 of the shock absorber.

The valve is adjusted by applying a current to the coil (0.24 A to max. 2.0 A) and the resulting changes inside the adjustment valve. Depending on the control position of the adjustment valve, the oil flowing from the shock absorber moves the main slider to a corresponding horizontal position so that a specific amount of oil can flow back to the shock absorber through the return channel. The main slider position is achieved by setting a differential pressure (compared with the pressure of the oil flowing from the shock absorber) in the inner control volume. The differential pressure is set by pre-tensioning the gap cross-section between the pressure head and control plate. If the pre-tension becomes greater, for example, the amount of oil flowing away centrally through the main slider and further through the ring gap and control channel is reduced, the pressure increases in the inner control volume and the main piston can only be moved slightly to the right. This changes the damping behaviour towards “hard”. If the pre-tension becomes smaller, the system behaves in the opposite way. The damping behaviour is changed towards “soft”

Function

Adjustment valve in “Normal” mode

In “Normal” mode, a current in a middle range between 0.24 A and 2.0 A is supplied to the coil. The armature is moved together with the push rod and pressure head and is pre-tensioned slightly.

The oil flowing from the shock absorber presses the main piston to a horizontal centre position so that a medium quantity of oil can leave again via the return channel and be fed back to the shock absorber.

This is achieved by setting a medium pre-tension between the pressure head and control plate.

The differential pressure is also set accordingly in the internal control volume and the position of the main piston is set in a horizontal middle position.

The damping behaviour is thus between “soft” and “hard”.

Adjustment valve in “hard”

In “hard”, the coil is powered in a range up to a max. of 2.0 A. The armature is pressed to the left together with the push rod and pressure head with maximum pre-tensioning to the left.

As a result, there are smaller gap cross-sections between the control plate and pressure head compared with “Normal” mode.

The differential pressure in the internal control volume increases and the main piston sets itself in its horizontal position so that a lower oil quantity flows back via the return channel to the shock absorber than in “Normal” mode.

This changes the damping behaviour towards “hard”.

This is a typical state of the adjustment valve for a considerably dynamic maneuver.

Adjustment valve in “soft”

In “soft”, the magnet is powered with 0.24 A, for example, and has less pre-tensioning together with the push rod and pressure head. The pressure head moves the control piston to the left by the same amount and releases the ring gap only in a slightly reduced cross-section. The oil flows via this gap and the subsequent control channel back to the shock absorber.

The gap cross-section between the control plate and pressure head increases with this slightly lower pre-tensioning of the pressure head. The differential pressure in the internal control volume drops. The main piston thus sets itself in its horizontal position so that a greater amount of oil flows back via the return channel than in “hard”.

This changes the damping behaviour towards “soft”.

This is a typical state of the adjustment valve for a considerably dynamic manoeuvre.

Adjustment valve in “Fail Safe”

If a shock absorber, at least two sensors or the electronically controlled damping control unit J250 fail, “Fail Safe” mode is set.

In “Fail Safe” mode, the shock absorbers are not powered and the vehicle behaves as if fitted with conventional shock absorbers. The armature moves together with the push rod and pressure head to the right until it rests against the valve housing. The control piston also moves and closes the direct access to the ring gap. The oil now opens the fail-safe valve and flows via the control channel to the shock absorber.

Volkswagen level senders G76, G78, G289

The vehicle level senders are so-called turn angle sensors.

They are all fitted near to the shock absorbers and are connected to the traverse links via coupling rods.

The wheel spring travel is forwarded to the sensors from the movement of the traverse links on the front and rear axle and on the coupling rods and converted into an angle of rotation.

The turn angle sensor used works with static magnetic fields and uses the Hall principle.

The signal output supplies a PWM signal (pulse-width modulated signal) proportional to the angle for shock absorber control.

The three level sensors are identical; only the mountings, the coupling rods and kinematics to the sides and axles.

Design

The sender is set up in a two-chamber system.

On one side (1st chamber), there is the rotor and, on the opposite side, (2nd chamber) the circuit board with stator.

The rotor and stator are each fitted so they are sealed.

The rotor consists of a non-magnetised stainless steel shaft in which a rare-earth magnet is glued. Rare-earth magnets are used where high magnetic field strengths in conjunction with the smallest possible dimensions are needed.

The rotor is connected to the coupling rod by the operating lever and is also driven by it.

The rotor is mounted in a radial shaft seal in the operating lever. This protects the construction from the elements.

The stator consists of a Hall sensor that is located on a circuit board.

The circuit board is moulded in a PU mass (PU = polyurethane) and is thus also protected against external influences.

Function

The magnetic flow is transferred and amplified using the Hall plates.

Unlike conventional Hall senders, these elements deliver special sine and cosine signals.

In the chip on the circuit board, the signals are converted so that the level changes of the body are recognisable for the electronically controlled damping control unit J250.

The rear body acceleration sender G343 is mounted at the top next to the left-hand rear shock absorber.

Design and function

The body acceleration senders work according to the capacitive measuring principle.

An elastic mass m oscillates between capacitor plates as a middle electrode that pulls the capacities of capacitors C1 and C2 opposite the rhythm of their oscillation.

The plate spacing d1 of one capacitor is increased by the amount that spacing d2 in the other capacitor is reduced.
