After upgrading the RNS 510 to a higher version of firmware (3810 or higher) from revision C or earlier hardware running software 2840 or earlier the backlight may stop working after the gateway update and subsequent reboot. The screen can still be viewed with some additional light.

This recovery cd is based on the 2760 firmware but can be used to recover RNS 510′s running any version. Insert the media into the RNS 510 and start a new SWL process by pressing Setup + Eject +Info/Mic (top right hand button next to the DVD slot). It will attempt to restore a new SWL process and will enable it to boot up. There may be a problem with the RVC not working after this however and if this occurs and you want that to remain working you will need to flash an older version.

This guide is just one of the steps to installing a Golf Mark VI RVC into a Golf Mark VI – Installing a Golf Mark VI Rear View Camera (RVC) into a Golf Mark VI.

The Volkswagen RVC Camera from the Mark VI has a drain hole under the camera in the housing and this does build up a substantial amount of water under the right circumstances, I found around a litre of water in the base of the hatch after a downpour and when the hatch was opened in ran down inside the area around the rear window. There are two problems with drainage into the rear hatch and one is that many Golfs have all three drainage holes plugged and painted over and the other is that not all water can drain but instead sits in the seam at the bottom of the hatch until the rear hatch is opened.

photos: the drainage hole at the base of the camera and the exit point under the camera.

I removed one of the drainage plugs in the middle and whilst it stopped the buildup of excess water I had concerns about the rear hatch long term especially when so much water can make it’s way inside the hatch. The Mark VI has a tube that drains to the outside and that’s what I’ve done here.

photo: drain tube from a factory fitted RVC fitted to mark 6 GTI

Fitting the tube

After the drain plug has been removed push the tube in.

The tube fits in under the lip on the bottom of the hatch so will require some jiggling around to force it under.

Connect the clear tube to the drain above it.

(note some of the photos above are from a Mark V that has a slightly different setup)

A common source of noise (rattling, clicking and squeaking) is the rear seat latches, when the seats move the lock mechanism moves around on the latch and makes a noise. You could try tapping them with a hammer from above to bend the latch slightly downwards but this doesn’t seem to fix the problem in most cases.

To test to see if it is the latches making the noise drive around with the seats lowered. If it is the latches the simplest fix is to wrap some electrical tape around the latch where the lock contacts it to stop the movement and remove the metal on metal noises. The fix should last for around 50 operations of the rear seats before you have to reapply the tape and only takes a few minutes and a roll of electrical tape (3M Temflex 1610 was used but any quality brand is ok, avoid cheap brands) in any colour except for body colour or black as you won’t be able to see if parts of the tape are stuck in the mechanism or if the tape requires replacing.

Lower the rear seats

Clean the latch with a suitable cleaner (99.7% Isopropyl alcohol or similar is suitable)

Wrap 14cms of 3M Temflex 1610 electrical tape (or equivalent) which will give you six full wraps.

Close the rear seat

The role of the Gateway (also known as the Data bus diagnostic interface J533) is the exchange of data between the CAN data bus systems (‘powertrain CAN data bus’, ‘convenience CAN data bus’ and ‘infotainment CAN data bus’) and the conversion of diagnostic data from CAN data bus systems to K-cable and vice versa so the data can be used by vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systems like the dealer VAS tools and Vagcom/VCDS.

For various reasons including power drain issues with third generation head units or the addition of new unsupported modules the CAN bus gateway must be upgraded to a newer revision. This guide covers the replacement of the CAN bus gateway in a 2005 MY06 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The upgrade replaces the 1K0 907 530 E (1K0907530E) with a 1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA).

This process works the same for most Volkswagen models.

1K0 907 530 E (1K0907530E)
Revision: 11

1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA)
Revision: H16

Record current installation list and long coding

Take screen shots or make a note of your installation list in controller 19 – Can Gateway using Vagcom/VCDS. This step is critical unless you want to figure out what you had installed prior to the upgrade. Don’t be tempted to copy down the long code unless you are installing the exact same revision of gateway as different revisions have extra features.

Whilst not essential it is worth taking a screen shot of the different screens in the long coding.

Removing and Installing the Gateway

Remove the key from the ignition or disconnect the car’s battery (the battery disconnect is optional but better safe than sorry)

Remove the footwell cover on the drivers side where the gateway is located – Volkswagen Golf footwell cover drivers side – Removal and Installation.

The gateway can be in two locations on the Golf. One is above the accelerator pedal and the other is above the clutch pedal (if fitted). The clutch pedal location was used for the first year or so of production.

This guide is just one of the steps to installing a Golf Mark VI RVC into a Golf Mark V – Installing a Golf Mark VI Rear View Camera (RVC) into a Golf Mark V.

Drain Tube Comparision

The black drain tube is 8mm x 90mm
(widest part at the base is 17mm)
Volkswagen part number: 3C8 827 861 A (3C8827861A)

The clear drain tube is 6.5mm x 150mm
(widest part at the base is 12mm)
Volkswagen part number: 5K6 827 861 (5K6827861)

The Mark VI has the RVC mounted 35mm lower in the rear hatch so that drain alone will not reach the RVC drain.

photo: drain tube from a factory fitted RVC fitted to mark 6 GTI

Widening the drainage hole

The drainage hole needs to be widened to take the drain tube, using the drain tube mark a hole around 1mm larger than the tube, this hole has to be offset as shown or the drainage tube will not fit. If this guide is being read to retrofit the tube to an existing install read the instructions here - Volkswagen Golf Rear Lid Trims – Removal and Installation.

Using masking tape mask up the area around the hole with multiple layers to protect the paintwork and tape over the surrounding areas to protect them from metal particles.

Put masking tape behind the hole and wedge some paper towels in there to stop metal particles from getting inside the rear hatch.

To increase the size of the hole use a diamond coated tip with a Dremel to remove the metal, I wore out three tips to increase the size of the hole.

Use a hacksaw blade or similar to protect the paint on the rear part of the hatch.

The hacksaw blade needs to be removed for the final widening of the hole.

Test fit the tube to make sure it has fits in loosely.

Push the tube in and fit it in place to check, it will take some force to fit the back in. To remove push the tube out from behind whilst levering on the outside part.

This tube is too short as the Mark VI RVC sits 35mm lower in the hatch, extending it will be shown in the next section.

Remove the tape and make sure there are no sharp edges.

Clean around the whole with a cleaning product in preparation for painting.

Paint around the hole with a metal primer to prevent rust.

Fitting the tube

After the primer has dried push the tube in.

The tube fits in under the lip on the bottom of the hatch so will require some jiggling around to force it under.

This tube is too short as the Mark VI has the RVC mounted 35mm lower.

Fortunately the other tube that was installed is made of a dense rubber and can stretch a bit.

Force it over the clear tube as far down as you can get it and trim the top to fit.

After fitting I applied some silicone to stop it from rattling against the sheet metal next to it and a few blobs to stop it working it’s way loose from the camera.
