Volkswagen Golf Mark VI Head Unit – Removal and Installation

Tools required

Trim removal tools
Torx T-20 driver

Remove all CDs from head unit
Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers and remove ignition key

Removing

Using trim removal tool and carefully lever out centre console cover in area of -arrows- and remove cover.

Remove bolts -arrows- from radio or radio navigation system.
Pull radio or radio navigation system out of installation box far enough so as to allow access to the connectors on the back of the radio or radio navigation system.

Press together connector locking mechanism in direction of -arrows-.

Then swing locking bar up in direction of -arrow- and pull out connectors.

Release connectors -arrows- on aerial connections and pull these out.

Installing

Installation is a reverse of the removal process.
Never press the display or buttons whilst fitting the head unit as this may damage the unit.
A new head unit requires the anti-theft code to be entered.
Coding of the car is required to accept the new head unit.

Upgrading 2nd generation headunits (RCD 300, RCD 500, MFD2) to 3rd generation headunits (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RNS 510, RCD 510)

Upgrading 2nd generation headunits (as fitted to the Golf Mark V and similar models MY05-MY09) to a 3rd generation headunit has a number of additional requirements depending on the year.

Tools required for the install include

Trim removal tools
10mm socket or spanner
Selection of flat and torx screwdrivers
Sharp hobby knife
VCDS from Ross-Tech to code the unit
Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses

Gateway Upgrade

If installing a RNS 510 with a software version more recent than 1200 or any other 3rd generation head unit the CAN Bus gateway needs to be revision L or greater. The gateway version can be identified by checking with VCDS or physically checking the gateway.

Aerial Upgrade

The 3rd generation head units require both aerial connections to share the same housing, the 2nd generation aerial connections are separate connections. Depending upon the year there are two options available ranging from AUD$10 to AUD$40 to resolve this problem.

Remove the old head unit

Remove the dash vent (or tray on non Climatronic units) by following this guide.

Remove the headunit by unscrewing the 4 screws and carefully sliding it out, watch out when the unit is released as it could drop and scratch the climatronic.

Release the cables from the rear of the headunit and put the headunit aside safely.

Whilst this guide is intended for the Volkswagen Skoda Bluetooth kit harness it applies to anything that requires interfacing to the quad lock connector on the rear of the head unit or that uses similar connectors around the car. This guide specifically for 2 x power connections and 2 x data connections.

The way this works is you remove the terminal from the housing, join that terminal to the matching terminal and insert the opposite terminal into the housing.

First you need to obtain the connector housings and repair wires.

1 x 000 979 133 (000979133) – 1mm repair wire – CAN bus Hi and Lo female.
1 x 000 979 134 (000979134) – 1mm repair wire – CAN bus Hi and Lo male.
1 x 000 979 225 (000979225) – 2.5mm repair wire – 12v and ground female.
1 x 000 979 226 (000979226) – 2.5mm repair wire – 12v and ground male.
4 x 191 972 701 (191972701) – Housing
4 x 191 972 711 (191972711) – Connector Housing

Step 1 – Cut the four repair wires in half, remove the insulation from the ends of all four and twist the exposed wire together. Do the same for the power and CAN bus wire. Join one male and one female repair wire half together (ensure that you join the 2.5mm female to the 2.5mm male) as shown and connect the ground wire to one and redo the step for the power wire.

Step 2 – Solder each of the four repair wire halves and the two power wires from the harness as shown.

Step 3 – Double the harness wire back on top of itself.

Step 4 – Using heat shrink cover each soldered area as shown. Use a smaller length to cover the join and than place a longer length over the top to minimise the chances of any shorts.

Step 5 – Repeat the last part of Step 1 with the 1mm repair wire and the CAN bus cable.

Step 6 – Place a piece of coloured heatshrink on one male/female CAN bus set, ensure that these are connected to the same wire! This allows you to ensure that you have hooked this up correctly later on. Repeat for the power set of cables.

Step 7 – This should be the finished result. Next tape it up using fabric adhesive tape – Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses

Step 8 – Install the housings and connector housings on the exposed terminals.

Step 9 – This is the finished harness ready for install.

Poor quality sound on the cd changer input can occur after the headunit has changed from a second generation headunit to a third generation headunit or vise versa. The fix is simple and requires pins 2 and 3 to be swapped on the head unit connector.

VAG 1K0907530S CAN bus gateway

Early build Volkswagen cars can experience a power drain issue after upgrading their 2nd generation headunit from a RCD 300 or RCD 500 to a 3rd generation headunit like the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510.

The problem is the CAN bus Gateway is too old and an updated version 1k0907530 (1k0 907 530) of L revision or higher is required - CAN bus gateway removing, installing and upgrading – Volkswagen Golf.

in vehicles belonging to the model series PQ35/PQ46 from

model year 2008 as well as the Tiguan,

Vehicles belonging to the model series PQ35/PQ46 from model year 2008 (MY08) as well as the Tiguan have gateways that are updated. Earlier models may require the updated CAN bus gateway to be installed. See Volkswagen Model Year Information for more details on the week of manufacture however generally Volkswagen change over Model Years around Week 22.

This problem does not* affect retrofits of the RNS 510 which is a 3rd generation head unit as this unit was in the production in 2007 whereas the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 are recent additions.

Check the ‘Skoda Parts’ link (right hand menu) for a reasonably priced gateway. Revisions that will work after the 1K0 907 530 S (1K0907530S) revision include 1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA), 1K0 907 530 AB (1K0907530AB) and 1K0 907 530 AC (1K0907530AC).

* This problem does now affect the RNS 510 if the firmware is upgraded to 2660 or higher. The RNS 510 will exhibit the same problems as the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 and requires the CAN bus gateway to be upgraded.

3rd generation connection

Upgrading from a 2nd generation radio (RCD 300, RCD 500) to a 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RNS 510, RCD 510) requires an antenna/aerial adapter to be fitted. The 2nd generation radios had two seperate connectors for the antenna/aerial connections whereas the 3rd generation still have the two antenna/aerial but in the one connector. As many of the 2nd generation had swivel antenna/aerial connectors replacing the fakra housing is not possible and an adapter is required.

Most recent Volkswagens including the Golf 5, Golf 6, Passat, EOS, Jetta, Polo, Touareg and so on have a diversity antenna system and twin tuners hence the two antenna/aerial connections, leaving one disconnected will affect the performance of the radio system and throw errors in the radio/navigation system.

The 2nd generation antenna/aerial connectors look like this (MY07.5 and later), earlier aerial connectors (MY07.5 and earlier) had a straight through lead from the rear and can use the cheaper solution.

Solution 1 – Suits all (both straight and right angle swivel)

Volkswagen have an adapter available that resolves this problem.

Partnumber is 7L6 051 551 (7L6051551) and this is available for around AUD$50, GBP£25 and USD$30 from any Volkswagen spare parts department.

Solution 2 – Suits straight only

If you have the non swivel antenna/aerial connectors you can purchase just the fakra connector that attaches to the back of the headunit and replace the existing two connectors with the new one (only one connector inserted in photo).

The part number is 4E0 035 608 K (4E0035608K) and it is available for around AUD$10, GBP£5 and USD$7 from any Volkswagen spare parts department.

Alternatives

Option 1 – Build an adapter from parts (suits both straight and right angle swivel)

You require the following parts

4E0035608K (4E0 035 608K) x 1 – Connector for the rear of the headunit
000 098 707 (000 098 707) x 2 – Cable to connect to the antenna/aerial connection from car

Option 2 – Purchase an alternative adapter (suits both straight and right angle swivel)

Kufatec sell a similar adapter for EUR€24.99 but shipping is expensive.

Option 3 – Remove the plastic housing (suits both straight and right angle swivel)

Remove the plastic surround around the antenna/aerial connectors using side cutters and push the connectors into the sockets on the headunit, there are a few problems with this method however and these include the connectors can fall out as there is nothing to hold them back other than the connector friction and the connector becomes loose over time. Upgrading the audio with the stock headunit without the factory amplifier

Upgrading the audio with the stock headunit in cars without the factory amplified is easy with the Blaupunkt PnP (Plug and Play) amplifiers. Two models suit the Golf Mark V and fit under the left hand side front seat where the factory amplifier would sit. Two parts are required, the amplifier itself and the PnP wiring harness which is available in two lengths, 2.5m for mounting under the seat and 5.5m for mounting in the rear of the car. Part number for the wiring is 7 607 622 016 001 (suits many other Volkswagen models as well). No alterations to the wiring is required, you unplug the headunit and plug an adapter in between the wiring harness and the headunit, this redirects the speaker outputs to the amplifier and the amplifier sends the amplified sound back to the factory harness.

Units with firmware prior to 2660 or with a older hardware revision have a 2GB limitation.
Some 4GB SD cards (not SDHC) will work. 2GB is the maximum size allowed by the specification of SD however there are some 4GB cards available. One that has been tested to work when formatted as a FAT32 card is the Transcend 4GB Secure Digital Memory Card Class 6 (TS4GSDHC6)

*3 Factory option only for Mark 6. The sound system developed for the Golf by Volkswagen and the Scandinavian hi-fi specialist Dynaudio can be paired with any of the 300 or 500 series units. The Dynaudio sound system offers pure high-tech sound: the four 168 millimeter woofers – made of a magnesium-silicate membrane, a very light 74 millimeter voice coil and an internal magnet design in a stiff plastic basket – provide for precise and powerful bass with high pulse fidelity in the doors and in the rear side panels. The 50 millimeter and 60 millimeter tweeters in the door and side trim supplement this sound with exceptionally clear transparency and complex sound impressions.

The loudspeaker system is supplied by a newly developed, digital 300 Watt amplifier; it consists of eight Class AB output amplifiers. The capabilities offered by the digital sound processor (DSP) for so-called propagation time correction (goal: to make a correction so that sound waves from all loudspeakers reach listeners’ ears simultaneously, regardless of their locations in the vehicle) and frequency equalization guarantee a sound experience of the highest level.
