Inside the Volkswagen / Skoda Bluetooth Car Kit

The bluetooth car kit is built around a TDA7590 a high performances, fully programmable 24-bit, 120 MIPS. Digital signal processor (DSP), designed to support several speech and audio applications, as automatic speech recognition, speech synthesis, MP3 decoding, echo and noise cancellation.

Nevertheless, the embedded CODE Cs bandwidth and the generic processing engine allow to proceed also full-band audio signals. The large amount of on-chip memory (128 Kwords), together with the 16 Mwords external memory addressable and the 32 general purpose I/O pins permit to build a DSP-system avoiding the usage of an additional microcontroller.

The presence of serial and parallel interfaces allows easy connection with external devices including CODECs, DSPs, microprocessors and personal computers.

In particular, the debug/JTAG interface permits the on-chip emulation of the firmware developed. Further, the presence of the timers and watchdog block makes TDA7590 suitable for PWM processing and allows the integration of a system watchdog.

Whilst this guide is intended for the Volkswagen Skoda Bluetooth kit harness it applies to anything that requires interfacing to the quad lock connector on the rear of the head unit or that uses similar connectors around the car. This guide specifically for 2 x power connections and 2 x data connections.

The way this works is you remove the terminal from the housing, join that terminal to the matching terminal and insert the opposite terminal into the housing.

First you need to obtain the connector housings and repair wires.

1 x 000 979 133 (000979133) – 1mm repair wire – CAN bus Hi and Lo female.

1 x 000 979 134 (000979134) – 1mm repair wire – CAN bus Hi and Lo male.

1 x 000 979 225 (000979225) – 2.5mm repair wire – 12v and ground female.

1 x 000 979 226 (000979226) – 2.5mm repair wire – 12v and ground male.

4 x 191 972 701 (191972701) – Housing

4 x 191 972 711 (191972711) – Connector Housing

Step 1 – Cut the four repair wires in half, remove the insulation from the ends of all four and twist the exposed wire together. Do the same for the power and CAN bus wire. Join one male and one female repair wire half together (ensure that you join the 2.5mm female to the 2.5mm male) as shown and connect the ground wire to one and redo the step for the power wire.

Step 2 – Solder each of the four repair wire halves and the two power wires from the harness as shown.

Step 3 – Double the harness wire back on top of itself.

Step 4 – Using heat shrink cover each soldered area as shown. Use a smaller length to cover the join and than place a longer length over the top to minimise the chances of any shorts.

Step 5 – Repeat the last part of Step 1 with the 1mm repair wire and the CAN bus cable.

Step 6 – Place a piece of coloured heatshrink on one male/female CAN bus set, ensure that these are connected to the same wire! This allows you to ensure that you have hooked this up correctly later on. Repeat for the power set of cables.

Step 7 – This should be the finished result. Next tape it up using fabric adhesive tape – Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses

Step 8 – Install the housings and connector housings on the exposed terminals.

Step 9 – This is the finished harness ready for install.

Installing the microphone requires removal of the A-Pillar Trims, the sun visor and part of the overhead console. The final parts of the install such as the connecting to a bluetooth car kit or the RNS 510 are covered separately.

Step 1 – Volkswagen Golf A-Pillar Trims – Removal and Installation

Step 2 – Pop off the screw cap using a fine screwdriver on the sun visor mount closest to the pillar and undo the torx screw, than tilt the bracket forward which will allow the sunvisor to hang from it’s harness for the illuminated mirror (if fitted – otherwise you can remove it completely).

Step 3 – Remove the light fitting using a trim removal tool and and gently levering on the side closest to the door. Now you insert the end of the microphone cable at the top of the A pillar and jiggle the wire around until you can pull it through the hole left by removing the light fitting (you may want to use a draw wire, 2.5mm home electrical cable is ideal).

Step 4 – Using a trim removal tool and working from the side that is towards the rear of the car pop the cover off that covers the area where the microphone installs (microphone installs in the rectangular area shown towards the top of the photo on the right hand side).

Step 5 -Undo the two torx screws visible in Step 4 above and gently pull the panel down working from the side closest to the rear of the car as there are a few clips at the front holding it in place. Disconnect the wires to make installing the microphone easier.

Step 6 – Using a draw wire bring the microphone cable over to the console area.

Step 7 – Remove the foam piece and install the microphone, it only goes in one way and is a tight fit.

Step 8 – To prevent rattles in the ceiling wrap the cable that runs from the A pillar with foam or rubber tape, make sure you wrap it along the length and cable tie it at each so if the adhesive fails due to the heat it won’t unwrap itself.

Step 9 – Connect the cable to the microphone and wrap the connectors with foam tape to prevent rattles. Reconnect the harness that connects to the console at this stage. And put the overhead console and mirror light back together.

Stage 10 – Cable tie the microphone down the A-Pillar as shown to prevent rattles and to keep it out of the way of the airbag.

Stage 11 – Re-install the A-Pillar following these instructions – Volkswagen Golf A-Pillar Trims – Removal and Installation

Adding a microphone to the RNS 510 to enable voice control is a simple process and there are a number of ways to go about it.

Option 1 – use the factory microphone as used in the Skoda bluetooth kit

The factory microphone is fitted in the overhead console and run to the rear of the RNS 510 (green highlighted connectors).

Parts Required

1 x 3B0 035 711 B41 (3B0035711B41) – Microphone – Satin Black

1 x 8D0 972 643 (8D0972643) – 2 Pin Housing

1 x 000 979 017 (000979017) – Repair Wire 0.5mm

1 x 3B7 035 447 B (3B7035447B) – 12 Pin Green Housing

1 x 000 979 009 (000979009) - Repair Wire 0.5mm

3m of microphone cable

2 core 14/.020 shielded cable (DRAKA DE FLRYWBYM 0.5-A+0.5-A is suitable) or

RG174 with 2mm and 3mm heat shrink tubing.

The 2 core cable is the easiest to connect you don’t need to heatshrink the shield and use it as the ground.

Install the microphone into the overhead compartment. Join the microphone wire to the 2 pin housing and route via the A pillar to the rear of the RNS 510 and connect to pins 1 and 7. The repair wires are cut into two giving you two pins. Ensure you have the polarity correct!

Option 2 – use the factory microphone that is used with the Skoda bluetooth kit

This routes the cable from the microphone to the RNS 510 (green highlighted connectors) and from the RNS 510 (purple highlighted connectors) to the bluetooth instead of it running from the microphone directely to the bluetooth unit.

Parts Required

2 x 000 979 009 (000979009) - Repair Wire 0.5mm

3m of microphone cable

2 core 14/.020 shielded cable (DRAKA DE FLRYWBYM 0.5-A+0.5-A is suitable) or

RG174 with 2mm and 3mm heat shrink tubing.

The 2 core cable is the easiest to connect you don’t need to heatshrink the shield and use it as the ground.

Cut the existing microphone cable around 5cm back from the Skoda bluetooth connector and route this to the rear of the RNS 510 along with one end of the microphone cable. The cable from the microphone is trimmed to the correct length and connected to the repair wire that has been cut into two. Keep the length of the repair wire as short as possible (under 5cm) to maintain the shielding. This cable connects to pins 1 and 7.

The new cable that you also have behind the RNS 510 is connected to repair wire cut in two and pins 4 and 9 and the other end after being trimmed is connected where you cut off the microphone cable at the Skoda bluetooth connector. Ensure you have the polarity correct!

Option 3 – use a 3rd party microphone (not tested nor has this been documented)

1 x 3B7 035 447 B (3B7035447B) – 12 Pin Green Housing

1 x 000 979 009 (000979009) - Repair Wire 0.5mm

1-3m of microphone cable depending on microphone location

Install the microphone, connect to the microphone wire and route to the rear of the RNS 510 and connect to pins 1 and 7. The repair wire is cut into two giving you two pins. Ensure you have the polarity correct!

After the hardware has been sorted coding is required on the head unit using Vagcom/VCDS.

Open controller 37 and click on coding.

Click on Long Coding Helper

Select Byte 3 and Bit 1 to enable Microphone Diagnostics (not essential but will alert you to problems with Microphone)

Finally deselect Byte 7 and Bit 1 to enable voice control and save the settings.

Multi Function Steering Wheel – Voice activation (optional)

If you car is fitted with the Multi Function Steering Wheel you can modify the mute button (* on the VW models) to activate the voice feature. This will not work if you have the Skoda car kit as this uses the mute buttone (*) for it’s voice dialling, no workaround has been found at this time so use the top right hand button adjacant to the dvd slot to active the feature.

Controller 16 – Steering

Select Coding 07 and you should see a 7 digit softcode which will be in the format 00xxxxx

The 4th digit from the right corresponds to the steering wheel variant. If you have a 4 spoke Multi Function Steering Wheel without the Cruise Control buttons it should be a 2. Change this to a 3 and that should convert your Mute button to activate the Voice Dialling.

1Z0 035 729 A (1Z0035729A) = 1T0 035 729 A (1Z0035729A) = 5P0 035 729 A (5P0035729A)
1Z0 035 729 A (1Z0035729A) = 1T0 035 729 A (1T0035729A) = 5P0 035 729 A (5P00035729A)
1Z0 035 729 A (1Z0035729A) = 1T0 035 729 A (1T0035729A) = 5P0 035 729 A (5P0035729A)

If you have a full height MFD operation of the phone can be controlled through that interface including access to the phone book. The RNS 510 ads to this by allowing you to search the phonebook of the phone easily, store names and numbers locally and start and end calls.

Pressing the star button (formally mute) on the Multi-functions steering wheel will mute the audio source at the time (except navigation instructions) and a tone will be heard at which time commands can be spoken to the unit.

List of possible commands
Say “Help” after the tone and the bluetooth unit will speak a list of commands.

Dial number by speaking.

Say “Dial Number” after the tone and say each digit, you may group the digits by pausing and the digits will be repeated back. If there is anerror say “Back” and that group of digits will be deleted and you may continue on. Once the digital have been confirmed correctly say “Dial” andthe bluetooth unit will respond with “The number is being dialed”. Saying “Cancel” at any point up until dialling will exit the bluetooth voice operation mode.

Redialling

Say “Redial” after the tone and the bluetooth unit will respond with “The number is being dialed”.

PhoneBook Operation

The voice phonebook is a seperate phonebook that is stored in the bluetooth unit seperately to your handset. The bluetooth unit has a capacity of 50 Names and Numbers.

Storing numbers in phonebook

Say “Store Name” after the tone and follow the instructions given by the bluetooth system. You will say the name twice before saying the number.

Playback of phonebook

Say “Phonebook” after the tone and the bluetooth system will play back the enteries in the phonebook in the order stored.

Dialing phonebook

Say “Name” after the tone and the bluetooth system will respond with “Say the name”.
