Rain closing activates only when the car has been locked.

The windows and sunroof if fitted will close automatically after 24 hours.

To activate the feature there are two steps, one is to enable the feature and one is to enable the menu if there is a full height MFD to give the option to enable or disable. If there is no full height MFD the system will still operate correctly but to enable or disable you will need to use Vagcom/VCDS.

If the car is fitted with an alarm and the interior sensors these will need to be disabled by pressing the button on the B pillar before locking the car as operation of the sunroof and windows may activate the alarm.

The wiper stalk may need to be in the automatic/intermittent position to operate.

Step 1 – Enable Auto Rain Closing

The menu will now give you the option to turn on or off the Rain Closing Feature.

Testing

To test wind down the windows and open sunroof if fitted, lock the car. Wait around 2 minutes and pour some water on the rain sensor (mounted on the glass behind the rear vision mirror) and after a short delay the windows and sunroof will close.

Issues

There are really no issues with enabling this feature. There have been a few reports of people getting a fault appearing in their Central Electronics Controller (09) from time to time “02071 – Local Databus- 004 – No Signal/Communication – Intermittent” but the system operates correctly and for some people depending on the revision of the RegenLichtSens where it just doesn’t operate.

The Golf can have the factory reverse system from other models (generally Tiguan 5N0) installed, there are a few caveats that must be checked first as some components in the car must be a particular revision or higher.

Gateway needs to be 3C0 907 530 H or higher. For the Tiguan or Passat controller you need to use a 9-byte long CAN gateway (L or N at the end), the Touareg controller may only require a 8 byte controller.

Kufatec sell a harness that connects the RNS510 to the reverse camera controller for 89 euros.

Parts required for install (not using the hatch/boot release detailed below)

Reverse Controller Tiguan- 5N0907441
Reverse Controller Toureg – 7L6907441B (not recommended)
Reverse Controller Holder – 5N0909537A
Camera – 5N0980551A
Cable for Camera 3M – 000098654A

Using VCDS/Vagcom you need to code the CAN gateway (19), the RNS510 (37 or 56), the RVC controller with 0010007 and then perform a camera calibration.

Camera mounting option – rear hatch/boot release

Integrating the camera into the rear pop up hatch release has been a project I’ve been looking into for a while, this is now made easier by the release of the MK6 Golf as this has a camera integrated into the hatch release.

Part Numbers

Golf 6 hatch release – 5K0 827 469J
Passat CC boot release – 5K0 827 469H

Mounting gasket is the same for Golf 6, Passat CC and Golf 5. Switch for the hatch/boot release is the same as well.

Both Golf 5 and Golf 6 use the Q CANBUS gateway.

Using an aftermarket reverse camera with the RNS510

I’m currently working on this as part of another project so the information here is sketchy for the time being.

In the Radio Configuration II there is a Byte 3, Bit 6 (Backup Camera Low – without control module)

Automatic opening of your Volkswagen Golf rear hatch is possible with a few easy changes. Not all cars will work so try the first part requiring VCDS/Vagcom before proceeding.

In VCDs/Vagcom change Byte 2 Bit 3 in the Central Convience Controller 46.

Once this is done when you press the hatch open button on the remote the hatch will pop out about 10mm. If this works then proceed to adding the springs.

Springs for hatch

Alternative springs for hatch

The springs on the left of the first photo are the correct ones to use with a size of 31.77mm long, 17.4mm wide and a spring wire thickness of 2.2mm, these were available from Mitre 10 and Bunnings along with other hardware stores in Australia but they are hard to find now in some areas. The spring on the right of the first photo cut into two is not suitable, it didn’t quite have the power required to keep popping the hatch.

The second photo is of a new spring stocked at Bunnings from the Century Spring Corp, the C-712 is very close to the specifications of the first spring at 31.75mm long, 17.475mm wide and a spring wire thickness of 2.337mm. The spring retails for AUD$4.75.

Warning, when you pop the strut off in the next step make sure you have an assistant or a brook or similar to hold the hatch up as it will drop and it’s very heavy.

Clip removal

Lever the clip back with a flat head screwdriver, don’t pop the clip completely off as it will be very hard to get back on. It takes a little force to pop the socket off.

This is the end of the strut with the end of the strut removed. To remove this use two pairs of vise grips and either plastic or a towel to protect the surface of the strut shaft and the end of the strut. Carefully remove the end piece and put to the side.

The cap on the end of the shaft has been removed, using some pliers with a towel this doesn’t take a lot of strenght to remove.

The spring is now slid down and sits nicely in the end of the strut.

Spring in end of strut

The spring should hold in the end of the strut by itself.

Cover back over the end of the strut

The cover install over the end of the spring and strut. Put silicon over the outside of the strut but make sure not to get it on the strut shaft as there may be some issues that arrise from silicon in that area. The cap will be a firm fit.

Follow the above instructions in reverse to refit. Then repear for the other side of the car.

All going well you should now have auto hatch opening.

Climate control system switches into recirculated air mode when reverse is selected and when you activate the wipers to prevent exchaust gas and the smell of the windscreen cleaner from being distributed in the cabin.

Headlights turn on when you exceed 140km/h.

Headlights will stay on until the car comes to a complete stop even if the engine is turned off.

Rear wiper activates automatically when you put the car in reverse and it’s raining.

Front wipers change position every time you switch off the car to avoid having the blades leaning in the one direction all the time and extending their life. There are 4 positions that they park in.

At speed the front wipers tuck in to increase aerodynamic efficiency.

Permanent vertical illumination of the controls via the interior LED lights was the resut of a study with the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany which found found that certain light sources in the interior can increase active safety when driving at night. The eyes can adjust more quickly to changes when switching from the road to the interior. This is especially important with dark headlining like the GTI.
