Installing switches in the center console to utilise the blank spaces either requires purchasing the optional switch for that location from Volkswagen however these are a momentary switch, have different markings on them (W for example) and connectors for the switch are not readily available or fitting an aftermarket switch which looks out of place. This guide uses an off the shelf switch and no-one would know the switch is there unless they press the button. Whilst this guide is performed on a Golf Mark V the same blanks are used in the Golf Mark VI so the same switch can be used and the same principles can be applied to any other car with a similar setup.

As an alternative there is a company called CarStyle4You that sells buttons with different engraving that match the OEM buttons and they also sell suitable oem switches. See the end of this guide for their details and a few sample photos.

(left: both switches down, right: both switches up)

The switch used here is a latching switch but momentary is also available. The switch illumination can be used but as the ends are removed you will get white light spilling out the sides so upgrading the internal light to a coloured LED gives a nice glow around the switch.

The switch used to be available from RadioShack in the US but they don’t seem to carry them anymore.

To allow the blank to fit and move freely the two sides of the switch around the cover of the switch must be removed, not that the base width must not be altered as it’s a perfect width for the centre console.

The finished switches ready for fitting to the centre console. When soldering the wire on keep the connections tight as the retaining nut has to fit over the soldered connections.

Fit the switches and align them on the front (there is limited adjustment) and screw the retaining nut down tight. Once aligned use some two part epoxy (araldite or similar) to lock it tight and prevent the retaining nut from working it’s way loose. The wires have been taped up using Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses and connectors fitted around 300mm down to allow easy removal of the central console.

The role of the Gateway (also known as the Data bus diagnostic interface J533) is the exchange of data between the CAN data bus systems (‘powertrain CAN data bus’, ‘convenience CAN data bus’ and ‘infotainment CAN data bus’) and the conversion of diagnostic data from CAN data bus systems to K-cable and vice versa so the data can be used by vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systems like the dealer VAS tools and Vagcom/VCDS.

For various reasons including power drain issues with third generation head units or the addition of new unsupported modules the CAN bus gateway must be upgraded to a newer revision. This guide covers the replacement of the CAN bus gateway in a 2005 MY06 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The upgrade replaces the 1K0 907 530 E (1K0907530E) with a 1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA).

This process works the same for most Volkswagen models.

1K0 907 530 E (1K0907530E)
Revision: 11

1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA)
Revision: H16

Record current installation list and long coding

Take screen shots or make a note of your installation list in controller 19 – Can Gateway using Vagcom/VCDS. This step is critical unless you want to figure out what you had installed prior to the upgrade. Don’t be tempted to copy down the long code unless you are installing the exact same revision of gateway as different revisions have extra features.

Whilst not essential it is worth taking a screen shot of the different screens in the long coding.

Removing and Installing the Gateway

Remove the key from the ignition or disconnect the car’s battery (the battery disconnect is optional but better safe than sorry)

Remove the footwell cover on the drivers side where the gateway is located – Volkswagen Golf footwell cover drivers side – Removal and Installation.

The gateway can be in two locations on the Golf. One is above the accelerator pedal and the other is above the clutch pedal (if fitted). The clutch pedal location was used for the first year or so of production.

This guide covers the installation of the puddle lights to the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta front doors as fitted in some countries and specifications of Mark V’s and to some models of the EOS. Along with the Door Warning Lights these really light up the area around the side of the car.

The light operates every time the door is operated and stays on after you close the door (longer than the coming home time) but turn off when you arm/lock the car. When you unlock the car they turn on and stay on longer than the leaving home time.

Adding puddle lights to the Volkswagen Golf or Jetta can be be achieved in two ways.

Purchase new mirrors with puddle lights fitted (estimated cost AUD$800/USD$400)

1K1 857 507 BT 9B9 – Driver’s Mirror, power, heated, puddle lights (MY06 Golf/Jetta)

1K1 857 508 BR 9B9 – Passenger’s Mirror, power, heated, puddle lights (MY06 Golf/Jetta)

Modify the existing mirrors to add a lense and suitable leds (estimated cost AUD$30/USD$25)

100 Lumen White Aluminium LED Module – USD $10.35 delivered worldwide (2 required)

36.7mm glass lens (10 pack) – USD $3.45 delivered worldwide (only 1 required as 10 in the pack)

000 979 018 (000979018) - Repair Wire (1 required for 2 doors)
not required if you are using the mirror heating wires

Exterior and Interior fabric adhesive tape - Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses

Trim Removal Tools

Selection of heat shrink tubing (3-5mm), soldering iron/blowtorch, solder

Vagcom/VCDS to code the door (this can be done before or after the install)

Volkswagen Golf & Jetta Door Controller Information Mark V has information on the door controllers. This guide was based on the install in my March 2008 build MY08 GTI.

First remove the door trim – Passengers Front Door Trim – Removal and Installation

The mirror cover – Removal and Installation of Mirror Covers from the Volkswagen Golf Mark V

And finally the mirror – Removal and Installation of Mirrors from the Volkswagen Golf Mark V

Extra cable to mirror

Adding extra cable to the mirror for the lights – this section can be skipped if you want to use the mirror heating cabling instead.

This is where the cable exits the mirror and enters inside the car.

This is the other end where the cable appears inside the mirror. Start by inserting the wire into the top and pushing inside.

The cable will be visible and you can fish it out with a suitable piece of wire.

Pull the wire through until you have almost enough to reach the controller. We need to wrap this cable next.

Using an exterior fabric adhesive tape – Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses – cover enough of the cable so that the part inside the mirror hinge and partway out each end is covered with two layers. This is especially important on the motorised mirrors that fold back.

Now pull the covered section through.

Leaving the uncovered section out like this.

Route the new cable as follows to follow the path of the existing cable.

And tape it to the existing loom.

This step identified Pin 10 as the positive power for the puddle light.

Insert the repair wire into the pin 10 position. Note. if you are using the mirror heater connection what you need to do is remove the pin from the mirror heater position and move it to pin 10.

Place a suitable piece of heat shrink tubing (3.5mm to 4.5mm) on the repair wire, bare the ends of the repair wire and new wire to the mirror and twist them together before soldering.

Now pull the heat shrink over the connection and apply heat to shrink.

Using an interior fabric adhesive tape - Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses – wrap the new cable onto the existing mirror loom.

Replace the Door Mirror

Now reinstall the door mirror – Removal and Installation of Mirrors from the Volkswagen Golf Mark

Fit the puddle light and lense to the mirror

Depress the clips on the rear of the mirror at the points shown and pull the frame towards you as shown by the arrows and it will slide off.

Undo the two torx screws shown to release the mirror indicator and the lower housing from the mirror (torx T10)

Once the indicator and housing are hanging depress the clip around the middle of the indicator and the two will separate.

Work out where you want the lense to be installed taking into account clearance at the front of the mirror for the mirror assembly, the frame we removed earlier and the height of the LED module.

Drill from the inside of the housing using a hole saw into some scrap timber (with paper towels on top if you don’t want to scratch the surface).

Next dremel around where the lense will go to increase the clearance for the LED module and to decrease the lip underneath the mirror housing.

Clean the surface with a suitable cleaner and apply some automotive silicone.

Push the glass into place and clean the excess off with mineral turpentine.

There will be a gap around the outside in which you fill with a 5 minute two part epoxy for strength. The silicone is mainly there for waterproofing plus the epoxy means after 30 minutes we can continue with the install. Remember to allow the silicone time to cure before you get it wet.

Fit the LED module into location and using 5 minute epoxy glue it into position, build the back up with double sided tape to provide mechanical strength.

The LED module glued into position.

Now reattach the indicator, route the wire (you will need to extend the stock wires, DON’T use the connector that came with it as they are useless and it will fail but instead solder the new ones and use heatshrink tubing) and check that the LED module is securely in place.

Removed the negative connection to the mirror and solder a wire to it and to the negative wire on the LED module before reattaching to the mirror. Use tape to connect the new wire to the mirror heater wire.

Note: If you are using the mirror heater wires for power detach the positive wire and solder a wire to it and the positive wire of the LED module but do not reattach the positive wire, instead pull it into the rear of the mirror and heatshrink it.

Both wires reattached to the mirror and the mirror surround frame slid back on.

Wrap the connectors up well to protect from water ingress.

Whilst this guide is intended for the Volkswagen Skoda Bluetooth kit harness it applies to anything that requires interfacing to the quad lock connector on the rear of the head unit or that uses similar connectors around the car. This guide specifically for 2 x power connections and 2 x data connections.

The way this works is you remove the terminal from the housing, join that terminal to the matching terminal and insert the opposite terminal into the housing.

First you need to obtain the connector housings and repair wires.

1 x 000 979 133 (000979133) – 1mm repair wire – CAN bus Hi and Lo female.

1 x 000 979 134 (000979134) – 1mm repair wire – CAN bus Hi and Lo male.

1 x 000 979 225 (000979225) – 2.5mm repair wire – 12v and ground female.

1 x 000 979 226 (000979226) – 2.5mm repair wire – 12v and ground male.

4 x 191 972 701 (191972701) – Housing

4 x 191 972 711 (191972711) – Connector Housing

Step 1 – Cut the four repair wires in half, remove the insulation from the ends of all four and twist the exposed wire together. Do the same for the power and CAN bus wire. Join one male and one female repair wire half together (ensure that you join the 2.5mm female to the 2.5mm male) as shown and connect the ground wire to one and redo the step for the power wire.

Step 2 – Solder each of the four repair wire halves and the two power wires from the harness as shown.

Step 3 – Double the harness wire back on top of itself.

Step 4 – Using heat shrink cover each soldered area as shown. Use a smaller length to cover the join and than place a longer length over the top to minimise the chances of any shorts.

Step 5 – Repeat the last part of Step 1 with the 1mm repair wire and the CAN bus cable.

Step 6 – Place a piece of coloured heatshrink on one male/female CAN bus set, ensure that these are connected to the same wire! This allows you to ensure that you have hooked this up correctly later on. Repeat for the power set of cables.

Step 7 – This should be the finished result. Next tape it up using fabric adhesive tape – Fabric Adhesive Tape for wiring looms and harnesses

Step 8 – Install the housings and connector housings on the exposed terminals.

Step 9 – This is the finished harness ready for install.

Secondary locking element

The secondary locking mechanism is a housing catch (second line locking mechanism) that secures all the wires in one contact housing. If a secondary locking mechanism is fitted to a contact housing, this must always be opened or removed using the appropriate tool before releasing and pulling out individual crimp contacts.
The secondary locking mechanism is different in colour from the rest of the contact housing. This makes it easier to identify the secondary locking mechanism and clarifies its intended function.
The types of contact housing shown here are just a few examples to show the different functions of secondary locking mechanism.

Example 1:

The housing catch is disengaged by removing a “toothed element”-arrow-.

Example 2:

The housing catch is disengaged by opening a “flap”-arrow-.

Example 3:

The housing catch can be disengaged by detaching a “slide”-arrow-.

Primary locking element

The primary locking mechanism is what fixes an individual crimp contact in the contact housing.
If necessary, any housing catches in place (secondary locking mechanisms) must be released or removed prior to disengaging the contacts using the prescribed tool.
The types of primary locking mechanisms shown as follows are just a few examples to show the different functions of primary locking mechanism.

Round connector systems

If necessary, any housing catches in place (secondary locking mechanisms) must be released or removed prior to disengaging the contacts using the prescribed tool.

Insert the release tool appropriate for the contact housing in the release port of the contact housing.

Grab hold of the contact by the wire and push it lightly into the contact housing -arrow-.

Note: By pushing the contact in the direction of the contact housing, the locking tabs of the contact are lifted up by the housing edge and can be disengaged using the release tool.

At the same time, push the release tool in the direction of the contact housing -arrow- and pull out the released contact from the contact housing.

The release tool can be pulled out of the contact housing again once the contact has been removed.
