Version 1100 Firmware for the Volkswagen RNS 510 has been released, the update upgrades the version to the B version and gives new features such as
- Bluetooth audio support
- AV output
- Faster touchscreen response
- New volume location at bottom of screen without any dimming
- Bluetooth Audio Support
- New Balance Fader
Units that can be upgraded include
- 1T0 035 680 (1T0035680) from software version 0421, 0520, 1000, 800 and 900 to version 1100.
- 1T0 035 680 A (1T0035680A) from software version 0421, 0520, 1000, 800 and 900 to version 1100.
- 1T0 035 680 B (1T0035680B) from software version 0421, 0520, 1000, 800 and 900 to version 1100.
- 7L6 035 680 (7L6035680) from software version 0522, 1002 and 1022 to version 1102.
- 7L6 035 680 A (7L6035680A) from software version 0522, 1002 and 1022 to version 1102.
- 7L6 035 680 B (7L6035680B) from software version 0522, 1002 and 1022 to version 1102.
- 1Z0 035 680A (1Z0035680A)
After the process is complete you will have a B revision unit.
The firmware can be downloaded from here in a NRG format and should be burnt to DVD +RW (CDR is also ok) using Nero. Alternatively you can download the ISO version from here.
Warning! When this upgrade is performed it will delete all the music and require your maps to be reloaded (last addresses and home address are retained however as are other settings). There is also a remote chance of your ‘bricking’ your unit. The process will take around 60 minutes.
- Unlock and/or open the car
- Do not start the car
- Turn the RNS 510 on and insert the firmware CD/DVD into the drive
First stage of firmware upgrade loading
Second stage of firmware upgrade loading
Unit will restart before the next stage
Unit after restart
First confirmation screen
Second confirmation screen
The process will quickly show 100% and move onto the next step
The actual firmware upgrade will now commence after this screen
Time remaining is shown at the base
Process is still going, once this step is finished the unit will change to the following screen
Eject the CD to restart the system
Sound setup menu - new option for AV output
New fader display
New options for bluetooth audio and artist/title names.
Insert the map DVD and it will automatically start loading. If you try and eject it early you will get the following message.
Early ejection of the map dvd will give this error.
Note: Setup now has to entered by coding using Vagcom\VCDS. See seperate guide for performing this.
Note: If you receive a clamp state error ‘a swl disk is detected but it is unvalid because of clamp state. please switch clamp state to hour mode and re insert disk’ this means you need to change the time format of the clock in the RNS 510 from 12 hour to 24 hour clock.

Unfortunately the RNS 510 do not communicate with the red dot screen and the right comands of the steering wheel not working. I try to code with VAG COM but it was impossible. Can you help me with that?

I have the (1TO 035 680 A) with software version 1020, and will upgrade to 1100, but will the secret meny, there all the version info work like with the 1020? press the setup when the player starts up? I have heard you have to code it with vag-com? But what code you need to change and will you get the secret meny then? ore its a another solutions?

I have a RNS 510, 1T0 035 680 B in my Jetta. The current firmware is v. 900.
It seems that I already here all of the new features listed. Will upgrading to v. 1100 offer anything for me?

Did the upgrade on my B unit from v900 to v1100. It worked but I don’t notice any difference other than the upgrade turned my access to the service menu off…again.

I’m trying to do the upgrade on the RNS 510 of my touran. However I’m getting the “Searching for SWL valid image” forever (looping every five minutes or so). Any clue ? Bad quality CD (but I don’t have any error msg) ?

Me again, it worked finally, but the RNS 510 seems to be quite sensitive with regards to the CDs and DVDs you put in it… I finally used a Verbatim CDR (burnt at 16x). It worked…

I have RNS 510 and it accepts only SC cards till 2 GB.
And who can tell me what is the difference between 510 A and 510 B version?

Thanks, Maverick. So there is no way to use SD cards bigger than 2GB? So firmware 1100 software upgrade won’t make it possible? Or are tere any other software updates that could make possible to use SD cards with more than 2GB sotrage? I don’t undestand why such a expensive system has such a limitation.

I need help, i tried to upgrade my rns 510 with the new software but i think i bricked it. It gave me an error while updating the files and now the unit is stuck at the “welcome to volkswagen” splash screen. Nothing happens and the unit does not read any disc. I’m unable to load previous firmware discs to downgrade or trying to re.install the latest firmware I’ve tries with v1100 and v1020 discs and they don’t work. When the unit is switched off for more than an hour, when i switch it on again it gives me an error screen “SWL error”, asking to do a reset “press mic+setup+eject”. when the reset is made, the unit gets stuck again at the welcome screen. It’s a big problem as i don’w know how to repair it, and really would avoid to trash it and buy a new one as it’s really expensive. Damn firmware upgrades

Hi, I tried to upgarde to 1100 but failed. Our well-known Gateway 202 error. I tried it again using the original VW Dealer cd but still the same error occured. Is there any possibility to reload my previous firmware or am I toasted?
Hi i have an rns 510 it has worked fine the past 6 months but now it gets lost. when i start the car and the map the location is incorrect therefore when i drive the direction and location are incorrect. this sometimes corrects itself after 40-60 minutes but is continuing to happen. will the upgrade solve this or does anyone have any solution.

Never mind my request above..I tried the download from another computer in the house and it worked….Installed on RNS unit too..now pondering weither to install 26xx or not..I may wait a little and see if naything new comes out in the next few weeks..

I’ve upgrade the rns510 with version 1200 and nav. Version 6.1.
(1100 version was done)
It all went well (no empty batteries, etc).
But unfortunately no FADER. (I did it mainly for the fader)
And this although this is the spec’s state of version 1100 and 1200.
How is this possible? Does i have change te Fader setting elsewhere (vagcom?) Setting the car has 4 speakers, so that the fader is activated?

The settings are available elsewhere on the site but you need to code it via vagcom/vcds.

AS PART OF THE NEGOTIATIONS WE AGREED HE’D PUT IN AN IPOD DOCK. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT THERE APPEAR TO BE NUMEROUS WAYS OF GETTING AN IPOD WORKING WITH THE RNS 510. THESE SEEM TO RANGE FROM A: A CABLE ONLY SOLUTION USING THE AUX-IN PHONO JACK WHERE YOU CONTROL SONG SELECTION FROM THE IPOD AND ONLY ITS VOLUME ON THE HEAD UNIT TO B: A FULLY INTEGRATED SOLUTION WHERE YOU CAN SELECT ARTISTS/ALBUMS/PLAYLISTS ETC. ON THE RNS 510… THE RNS 51O MANUAL THAT CAME WITH THE CAR SUGGESTS THAT WHEN THE IPOD IS CONNECTED, THE IPOD’S NAME APPEARS ON THE MEDIA SELECTION MENU. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH OUR SET UP. ALSO WHAT THE DEALER HAS DONE IS INSTALL (IN PLACE OF A 6 CD CHANGER IN THE ARM REST) A SIMPLE LOOKING ADAPTOR (1K0.857.925.B) WHICH HOLDS THE IPOD VERTICALLY. BY ITS WEIGHT I WOULD GUESS IT CONTAINS NO ELECTRONICS – JUST THE IPOD DOCKING PLUG AND THE LEAD WHICH PLUGS INTO THE CAR INSIDE THE ARM REST.

ANY AND ALL ADVICE YOU PROVIDE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
You may have to update the firmware on the head unit to use the retrofit kit (ebay has some cheap kits) and this will give you full integration. Version 1200 or greater should work ok.
There are some caveats however and if you upgrade above version 1200 you may have the location issue at startup with the GPS however you will get SDHC capability with the SD card reader and other features (see the firmware update pages for details).
