Firmware Changes
Version 0111 – production (from week) KW22/2010
(any MDI’s produced or fitted in the factory from week 22 2010 onwards should have this version fitted out of the factory)
See Volkswagen Media Device Interface (MDI) Firmware Upgrades for the latest version.
General Notes
See Volkswagen Media Device Interface (MDI) Firmware Upgrades for general information on the firmware updates including restrictions, file formats and connectivity.
Firmware is for units with a software version of 0090 or greater, if firmware is unable to be updated or you have already flashed this version it will not load.
- Download the firmware from one of the links below.
- Copy the file mdi.bin.enc in the root (top) level of a USB flash drive and insert this into the USB cable.
- Turn the headunit on or start the car and the update will proceed. If the MDI is selected the status will be displayed.
- After around 1 minute the update will complete and the USB flash drive may be removed.
(This file needs to be renamed from mdi.bin.kw22-2010.enc to mdi.bin.enc. You may not see the .enc extension so this is nothing to worry about – just remove the version number “.kw22-2010″ and proceed with the update)
Possible Error Messages during the update process
- Update with older version is not possible
- The file on the USB flash drive is older than the software version on the MDI.
- Update on the same version is not possible
- The file on the USB flash drive is the same as the software version on the MDI.
- Update file is corrupted or damaged
- Re download the file and start again
- Multiple update files found
- There are multiple update files in the root of the USB flash drive, delete the older versions and start again.
- Update was terminated
- An error has occured in the update, start again.

I use the new style western digital passport drive 500Gb works just fine
Does the hard drive remain on at all times?
Do you need to manually remove it to power it down?
Since I installed this firmware my MDI no longer remembers what track it was playing when it is powered off so each time I start the car it begins to play the first MP3 file in the root of the drive.
I’m using a 160Gb 2.5″ SATA drive (I forget what brand and model) in an Icybox USB enclosure. Prior to this firmware it didn’t have this problem. Is it possible to downgrade the firmware?

Thanks
hi guys–
I can’t seem to find out HOW to apply this upgrade–do I format a memory card? Is there a USB port somewhere that I just haven’t found yet?
thanks,
mike
You need the MDI to USB cable, then connect a USB drive as per the directions above.
I have upgraded my RCD 510 with this software update, but my iPhone 3GS 16G still skips at the start of each track.

Hello.
How do I undo this update please?
It hasn’t solved the ipod skipping issue, but has de-alphabetalised the ‘songs’ listing, and it leaves the ipod on when the ignition is switched off?
My car is a March 2010 Scirocco.
Thank you.
Hello,
i have a skoda octavia modell base 2011. the mdi-interface works great…
but when i will flash the new fw (22/2010) nothing is happen…
only the information:
sw update…
i can see on the swing carradio….
after waiting several minutes till to one hour….nothing happen…
i have tested with two different flash drives (both works perfet for playing music on the mdi-interface)
so anyone have a solution for this problem ???
Why is the Media Device Interface (MDI) unable to access a USB Sandisk cruzer 8GB to play MP3 files. The USB stick is in FAT32 format and the MP3s play ok on the pc. If the MP3 files are copied to another USB stick; ie. 2GB and FAT format they can be played by the Media Device Interface (MDI).
If I connect an ipod to the MDI, it remains on at all times (when the ignition is for a prolonged period).
If I connect a USB hard drive will the hard drive always be powered on and always spinning the disk?
How long would this take to drain the battery?
Is there any way to get the MDI to power down when the ignition is off?
Pull the key out it turns off after a minute.
I’m using a 32GB FAT32 USB stick, loaded with music from iTunes in Artist/Album folders (around 5000 tracks in total). When I use ‘Mix All’ on my RCD310, it seems to only shuffle between tracks in the first few folders (ones starting with artists starting with A, B, or C). I’m assuming this is a firmware issue with the MDI.. but before I try messing around with replacement firmware (and, givem my new Polo was a week 26 build I’m guessing it already has this firmware loaded), I wondered whether anyone else has experienced this. And, if you have, did you manage to find a fix?

Do you know when an update to play 4th gen ipod shuffle will be available?

Has anyone managed to get a Windows Phone 7 device to play music via the MDI?
I just got my mk6 SE golf. 59 plate reg sep 09.
The MDI doesn’t like my old school iPod 3rd gen like the mk5 iPod connector did in my old Match.
Will this update sort that out or do I need to buy a new iPod?
It’s the White 3G one with grey LCD and 4 touch buttons along top of the scroll dial thing… 40gb
Any help greatly received
hi! I put on my Polo 6R a post car-delivery MDI but it doesn’t work well with my iPod 5G Photo 30gb (sound has a lot of distortion and base volume higher than usual!). I tried instead with my dealer iPhone 3GS 16gb and it worked perfectly! With this upgrade should it work?
PS firmware on iPod is 1.3!
Maverick, looks like a new version has been recently released (22/2011)
See link: http://87.230.74.92/fileadmin/pdf/media_in/oledata.mso
Note the name is now different –> oledata.mso
Watchout the upgrade; I had some problems with it and wrote to VW the following:
hi! I download from your site the upgrade for the media-in device (valid from 22/2011, file name OLEDATA.MSO). I put it in my pen drive’s root, started my RCD510 and selected MEDIA-IN. After few seconds I got the following message: NO UPGRADE FOUND.
Before swiitching off the car (New Polo GTI 6R) I noticed something strange on the cockpit.
The following warning signals were on:
- Tyre pressure monitor
- ABS (blinking!!)
- ESP/ASR
- Engine/Catalyser
Furthermore the reverse gear light, when selected, didn’t turn on!
One hour later I started the car again and everything was perfect, as the day I got the car!
Which can be, according to you, the reason of this temporary malfuction? Basing on my previous MDI Upgrade I can say the problem is the name of the file (previous one was MDI.BIN.ENC and now as I said OLEDATA.MSO)!
Hope nothing happened to the car! This morning anyway everything was fine!
Please let me know!
Ben

does anyone know how to play mp3 ‘s on RCD 310 from Samsung Galaxy Nexus WITHOUT resorting to cables (other than the media in-cable) or Buetooth???
Could someone please answer this. When using a portable hard drive with the rns-315 via the mdi how does the hard drive need to be formatted, ntfs, fat32 or does it not matter? Also is there a limit to the size of he hard drive?
It needs to be formatted as FAT32. There is an immediate 2TB limit to FAT32 but the device cannot handle more than 5000 folders and 15000 files.
