Version 2720 / 2722/ 2724 / 2726 / 2728 Firmware for the Volkswagen RNS 510 and the Skoda Columbus has been released. The following are the features from 2660 and there is no word of new features in 2720.

Units that can be upgraded include (still being compiled may not be 100%)
- 1T0 035 680 C (1T0035680 C) from software version 1000, 800, 900, 1100 and 2660 to version 2700.
- 7L6 035 680 C (7L6035680C) from software version 1002, 1022, 1102 and 2664 to version 2700.
- 3T0 035 680 A (3T0035680A) to version 2704.
- 7F0 035 680 (7F0035680) to version 2700.
- 7E0 035 680 (7E0035680) to version 2700.
- Further to follow as the firmware is loaded.
- USA Firmware has yet to be released
- Revision A units can be upgraded with the modified firmware (see link below) – thanks to Josi (also for the unofficial SWL recovery CD)
Download the files and extract them using winrar and you will have a NRG format ISO file to burn. Using Nero burn a DVD+RW or DVD-R (CDR works as well) at a slow speed (4 x is ok for DVD and 16 x for CD). Make sure you use quality media and keep the burn speed down as low as you can to ensure there are no problems during the installation process. Also note that you may need to edit a file before you burn it (see below) if you want to access the setup menu without Vagcom/VCDS.
Warning! This upgrade WILL delete your music and/or maps if you have a firmware version PRIOR to version 1100/1102. Units with a firmware version of 1100/1102 will not have music and maps deleted.
Warning! There is a remote chance of you ‘bricking’ the unit, this is a fraction of a percent but it could happen! The process takes around 60 minutes.’
Warning! There are a small number of users where the RNS 510 does not know where it is after it’s been powered on, details of the previous location are kept in the unit but at this stage there is no pattern to this problem.
Warning! Users with cars MY07 and earlier may experience power drain issues after the upgrade. See the post “Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue” for more details.
Warning! Users with the Skoda UHV bluetooth 1Z0 035 729 B (1Z0035729B) may want to delay upgrading the firmware, there is an issue with the RNS 510 no longer displaying the phone book and/or the call details but signal strength etc are visible for some phones. My HTC Diamond for example worked fine before the update but only partially afterwards however my Iphone 3G worked fine before and after. This is not a problem with the 1Z0 035 729 D (1Z0035729D) Skoda UHV bluetooth kit. The MFD functions as per normal with phone book and last calls listed correctly. Android 2.1 phones work fine with the update.
Note! - Test/Setup Mode. The firmware can allow access to enter test/setup mode without Vagcom/VCDS access see Accessing the Setup Menu on the RNS 510 head units with firmware later than 1100. The procedure for entering the test/setup mode for those with Vagcom/VCDS is slightly different as well. To enter the test/setup mode when the RNS 510 is operating press and hold the setup button, keep holding it when the radio menu appears and shortly after the test menu appears . I had to reboot my unit after coding it but it may be possible a power cycle is enough.
Note! - Failure (Gateway Error 202) - You can downgrade back to 1100 by inserting the 1100 firmware and rebooting the RNS 510 (Setup + eject + info).

- Unlock and/or open the car
- Do not start the car
- Turn the RNS 510 on and insert the firmware CD/DVD into the drive

Download Unofficial SWL recovery CD
This is used if the unit is stuck with Gateway Error 202 or similar and is unable to boot after the upgrade. It’s based on the 272x firmware but can be used to recover RNS 510′s running any version. Insert the media into the RNS 510 and start a new SWL process by pressing Setup + Eject +Info/Mic (top right hand button next to the DVD slot). It will attempt to restore a new SWL process and will enable it to boot up. (Thanks again to Josi)

Better to try a quality DVD with 4x speed.
That’s not true. Tested and confirmed. No matter what you choose and record – neither CD or DVD – it doesn’t work. So I rather think of my previous information coded in user.cfg file as the right conclusion…

I’ve the same problem as Erwin. Tried everything, CD-R, CDRW, DVD, slowest burm speed, first installed a lower firmware, but SWL Error keeps coming. Anyone any idea or help? I would like to update my Columbus (RNS510) system.
Try to upgrade to 1200, then with 2600 and finally with 2720.
Burn with ImgBurn 2X speed.

As many already noticed, latest 270x/272x/274x software from VW lack support for revision A units.
Here is a modified 2720/2726/2722/2728/2724 software to work on all A/B/C revision Volkswagen RNS 510 and the Skoda Columbus units, including 1T0035680A/1Z0035680A. Like original 272x, it is an upgrade CD and it will keep existing coding and all information on HDD.
TestMode is already enabled, but for Skoda Columbus in pre-facelift Octavia A5 PQTABLE/SKTABLE swap is still needed.

And here is an unofficial SWL recovery CD, in case your unit is stuck with Gateway Error 202 or some other failure occurs during the upgrade and unit is unable to boot up afterwards. It’s based on latest 272x software but can be used to recover RNS-510 running any software version – just insert it and start a new SWL process by pressing Setup + Eject + Info/Mic/whatever top right button. It will try to restore basic coding (including TestMode) and finish SWL, and if your unit is not completely damaged, it will boot up

Thanks for tour effort to help us all. I have tested your job and it looks like you have modified some files to add descriptions and one big file RADIO.FLI to the original image. Did you have an opportunity to run this on previously impossible to upgrade radio? Are there any hardware related issues which will brick units A or it was just a factory trick to stop upgrade these ones?

It was tested on Skoda 1Z0035680A and some VW 1Z0035680A revision A units (with help from some vwnavi.com forum members) before making it public. I don’t know why VW is not supporting A revision units in latest firmwares, maybe due to possible compatibility issues like power drain and Regensburg Syndrome in combination with some older CAN-gateway modules.

I can confirm, that the modified firmware works well with RNS 510 rev A. I have a Regensburg syndrome – but it’s not a problem for me. I hope this problem will be solved with future software releases.

Thank you for the modified firmware image, i used it on my (August 2009) Octavia 2 FaceLift two days ago and all went well the update took about 52 minutes to install.
All functions continue to work including my multifunction steering wheel buttons, climate control, parking sensors.
Diagnostic Setup menu also works by pressing and holding the Settings button for 30 seconds.
All my music was still on the internal hard-drive.

I realise I may have spoken a touch too soon…
I now cannot edit any of the mp3 files on the hard drive, copy new ones on, delete or rename any of them. I have a 3T0035680A H04 unit I upgraded to your 2724, had 6.0 maps and a number of mp3′s I had already copied on prior to the patch.
Now when I go to copy a tune, it pops up and disappears immediately, check the file has copied, and it hasn’t. Deleting a file brings an error “The active audio file cannot be deleted.”, and renaming a file comes up with “Funcion unsuccessful. Please check name. [Repeat] [Cancel]”
I’ve seen at least one other user on another forum with this problem.

I would like to ask you for something if possible please, I live in Egypt and i contacted Navteq many times to get maps for my region but for sorry they are saying that that map database was published but there are no plans to produce a DVD for that soon, do u have any ideas or help so we can for example convert from igo to navteq ?

NAR RNS-510′s will be getting an update shortly. A TSB should be out by the end of this month. The SWL version will be 1100.
The 1100 FW only works on US units with HW02 or later. H01 and H15/17 units dont work with this new SWL.
The complete 2720 can be installed without problems on a 1T0 035 680 HW 74th
Unfortunately, I can not for my Columbus 3T0 035 680 which is incorporated into a VFL Octavia, not replace the two files with WinISO. After the exchange I get an error message when you start the update “SWL image not valid”

you got the 2720_ALL.nrg working on a 3T0 035 680 (not 3T0 035 680 A)?
If that is the case you still had to swap the two files even you own a face-lift Octavia2? (I thought swapping needs only performed on pre-FL?)

Yes, it does. I have upgraded Josi’s modified firmware and it works well with my rev A. Regensburg syndrome is not a problem for me as my device gets GPS fix very quickly and finds the correct place within the map.

I’ve just installed this in a pre-facelift Mk 2 Octavia without swapping the PQTABLE and SKTABLE files around. The software has installed, but I’ve lost my multi-function steering wheel buttons. Will these return if I swap the files around ?

Before the upgrade everything worked perfectly, including the steering wheel buttons, no longer work after upgrading the controls on the steering wheel.
Can anyone help me on how to solve the problem.
I tried to make the setup dowgrade with keys + info + mic, or 1200 to version 2.660, but nothing to do always gives me an error, even after installing the fix 2.700 nrg files.

Note! Skoda owners (thanks to Ted)
1. Extract files PQTABLE and SKTABLE from image (use magiciso or ultraiso). Files can be found from path: \VUCI\B101\RNSMIDEC\PROG
2. Switch the filenames by just renaming SKTABLE to PQTABLE and vice versa
3. Overwrite the renamed files back to image and save the image. Burn this image to DVD or CD.
4. Load or reload the Firmware to your RNS-510 using the steps below.
5. Voilá… buttons are back!

I have a similar issue as reported by Mikro. After I updated today my RNS-510 Columbus from version 2684 to 2724 some functions of the buttons on my multi functional steering wheel are gone! For example: on the left spike of my multi functional steering wheel I have a scroll button for adjusting the audio volume. This scroll-button is not working anymore, so I cannot adjust the audio volume. However, when I press the scroll-button the audio is muted as expected. Also some menus of the dot-matrix screen between my speedometer and rev counter are missing such as: Navigation, Radio. The only menus left are MDF and SETUP. For your information, I did swap the PQTABLE/SKTABLE files as indicated. However, not all functions of the multi functional steering wheel are retained. Can you please help me?
If necessary I also would like to downgrade back to 2684, just as Mikro, but preferably I would like this issue to be solved with version 2724 (or higher).

I got a aug 09 built mk 6 golf, recently upgraded by a tech to 2660 to support voice control… I have no clue on what version of the RNS 510 I have so am unsure on what software I’m supposed to be installing. If anyone could help that would be great.

Does anyone now the difference between the version 2660 / 2662 / 2664 / 2666 / 2668 and this version. The release notes are exactly the same.
Only the date is different (2009-06-11 for the 26** version and 2009-12-18 for the 27** version). I don’t think that is the only difference

Batterie Problem und Regensburg Problem bei Skoda 1Z0035680A mit 2720 all v1.
I have attempted to update the firmware from SW-1200 to SW-2720 and all appeared to install correctly but will now not re-boot. I have th VW splash screen and a message in a red band top and bottom that says “System can not start up – please insert SW CD”. I have tried the fix but the result is the same. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just upgraded to 2720, installation went fine. The CD was ejected, but afterwards the screen went black? Any ideas?
I tried on my RNS 510 fw 2660 and fw 2720 and I have just two problems:
1- in both case I don’t have bluetooth connection inside MEDIA menu to listen music from bluetooth source (es. telephono or mp3 reader)
2- with fw 2720 the clock is not displayed if RNS 510 is swtiched off (with 2660 worked well)
Battery problem and Regensburg problem Skoda 2720 all v1, RNS510 1Z0035680A powers not off. 904 is more stable
Is there a way to figure out which FM version I have? My car was purchased at the end of February and i seem to have all of the listed features except voice control. I have the upgraded bluetooth module, would this bee interfering with my using voice control?
I can confirm that Josi’s verson (2720_all_v1.rar) worked on my German Golf VI manufactured in Sep 2008. All features (including steering wheel buttons & voice features) are functional, no loss of data, no Regensburg Syndrome (didn’t have it before). Thanks!!
Just updated. Operation was smooth. RNS is factory installed.

After update it needed several minutes to fix GPS and Compas. Initially it was somewhere in Germany. For now everything looks fine.
I have “Bluetooth Premium” which has its own voice control and it still works. The voice control for other features (navigation) as advertized does’t work, or maybe I don’t know how to use it
In my opinion, the most visible change over FW900 is the RVC screeen. One downside I just noticed is that after reversing and parking the car in position “P” (auto) the OPS stays on the screen until I press “back” on the screen or the dedicated button on the central console. I think with previous FW the OPS was disapering after switching transmission to “P”.
You don’t have second microphone, I had same problem.

I have a 09 CC with what I think a unit A, I have try upgrading so many times and it always comes with error 010306 or 010303.
Now it says ” a SWL error occurred and now the maximum SWL error count has been reached SWL is now blocked until a power cycle ++
The original FW was still running till today.

You can always start a new SWL by pressing Setup + Eject + Info/Mic buttons.

The errors always after it say that it found a valid verify SWL right after that about 5 minutes in to the process.
I have try the Setup +Eject+Info and nothing, that was working fine a few days ago I could reboot it but cense this new error saying maximum SWL error occurred it will not do anything,
I was thinking of unplugging the battery or take it to VW .
What unit comes with all CC (A)?

US Firmware v1100 is still not out yet but should be out some time in May.
Josi, I took my car to VW dealer and they reset it so it works but it will not upgrade just like before.
They told me that the reason why it lock was that I try installing after market SWL.
Does the CC in USA will take any of your updates 26XX or 27XX?
No, US-spec RNS-510 units have different hardware with SDARS support, and EU-spec 26xx/27xx firmware will not work for them.

Upgraded to 2720. I used it on my (september 2009) Octavia 2 FaceLift (Combi Elegance Business) where the RNS510 is factory fitted.
Everything is still working fine.
- Steering wheel buttons: OK
- Music and Map data still on harddisk: OK
- No regensburg syndrome: OK
- Bluetooth/phonebook still working: OK

As you prolly read from VW-Navi forums, I fixed this issuea by downgrading to 1100 and then back to something newer. Think this is the only choice. First I tried to update to some other “factory reset” firmware, that should’ve formatted the disc but it didn’t. And as you asked at vwnavi, yes this will reset your coding too.
I think the “TV Free” button trick does no longer work with this firmware.

I have a 2009 Touran with VW installed RNS510.
I upgraded to 2680 and all worked well for a few weeks, then the SD card reader stopped working.
VW refused to fix it because the software was not supplied by them. I have upgraded to 2720, but no change.
Any ideas?

Downgrading to an older version won’t fix the sd card problem but will allow you to go to another dealer and have the RNS 510 replaced under warranty.
Can you downgrade simply by creating a CD or do I need to do something else?

Hmmm… When are they gonna release a FW update that fixes all the effing bugs associated to the 1Z0 B revision Bluetooth Handsfree? The last few FW updates since the 2660 FW have virtually been the same. None of them fix the bluetooth problem. Off course I can downgrade to 1100FW, but then I will Speed Limit Warning, and 32 GB SDHC compability:-(
So come on, get out a bugfix for the bluetooth issue!
