Version 2720 / 2722/ 2724 / 2726 / 2728 Firmware for the Volkswagen RNS 510 and the Skoda Columbus has been released. The following are the features from 2660 and there is no word of new features in 2720.

- Additional adjustments for video
- Larger RVC screen with transparent menus at the side
Units that can be upgraded include (still being compiled may not be 100%)
- 1T0 035 680 C (1T0035680 C) from software version 1000, 800, 900, 1100 and 2660 to version 2700.
- 7L6 035 680 C (7L6035680C) from software version 1002, 1022, 1102 and 2664 to version 2700.
- 3T0 035 680 A (3T0035680A) to version 2704.
- 7F0 035 680 (7F0035680) to version 2700.
- 7E0 035 680 (7E0035680) to version 2700.
- Further to follow as the firmware is loaded.
- USA Firmware has yet to be released
- Revision A units can be upgraded with the modified firmware (see link below) – thanks to Josi (also for the unofficial SWL recovery CD)
Download the files and extract them using winrar and you will have a NRG format ISO file to burn. Using Nero burn a DVD+RW or DVD-R (CDR works as well) at a slow speed (4 x is ok for DVD and 16 x for CD). Make sure you use quality media and keep the burn speed down as low as you can to ensure there are no problems during the installation process. Also note that you may need to edit a file before you burn it (see below) if you want to access the setup menu without Vagcom/VCDS.
Warning! This upgrade WILL delete your music and/or maps if you have a firmware version PRIOR to version 1100/1102. Units with a firmware version of 1100/1102 will not have music and maps deleted.
Warning! There is a remote chance of you ‘bricking’ the unit, this is a fraction of a percent but it could happen! The process takes around 60 minutes.’
Warning! There are a small number of users where the RNS 510 does not know where it is after it’s been powered on, details of the previous location are kept in the unit but at this stage there is no pattern to this problem.
Warning! Users with cars MY07 and earlier may experience power drain issues after the upgrade. See the post “Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue” for more details.
Warning! Users with the Skoda UHV bluetooth 1Z0 035 729 B (1Z0035729B) may want to delay upgrading the firmware, there is an issue with the RNS 510 no longer displaying the phone book and/or the call details but signal strength etc are visible for some phones. My HTC Diamond for example worked fine before the update but only partially afterwards however my Iphone 3G worked fine before and after. This is not a problem with the 1Z0 035 729 D (1Z0035729D) Skoda UHV bluetooth kit. The MFD functions as per normal with phone book and last calls listed correctly. Android 2.1 phones work fine with the update.
Note! - Test/Setup Mode. The firmware can allow access to enter test/setup mode without Vagcom/VCDS access see Accessing the Setup Menu on the RNS 510 head units with firmware later than 1100. The procedure for entering the test/setup mode for those with Vagcom/VCDS is slightly different as well. To enter the test/setup mode when the RNS 510 is operating press and hold the setup button, keep holding it when the radio menu appears and shortly after the test menu appears . I had to reboot my unit after coding it but it may be possible a power cycle is enough.
Note! - Failure (Gateway Error 202) - You can downgrade back to 1100 by inserting the 1100 firmware and rebooting the RNS 510 (Setup + eject + info).
Steps to load firmware
- Unlock and/or open the car
- Do not start the car
- Turn the RNS 510 on and insert the firmware CD/DVD into the drive

Download Unofficial SWL recovery CD
This is used if the unit is stuck with Gateway Error 202 or similar and is unable to boot after the upgrade. It’s based on the 272x firmware but can be used to recover RNS 510′s running any version. Insert the media into the RNS 510 and start a new SWL process by pressing Setup + Eject +Info/Mic (top right hand button next to the DVD slot). It will attempt to restore a new SWL process and will enable it to boot up. (Thanks again to Josi)

I think the size of the iso is too much different between 2700 and 2720.
Version 2660 = 468 MB
Version 2680 = 469 MB
Version 2700 = 539 MB
Version 2720 = 469 MB
What is in 2700 more ?

maybe a extra powercycle (+(i)) will bring MFD (audio+nav) back.

* in fact everything else works (except the VIM-hack).

The image name, when you open it with UltraIso or nero is 4.848.801, but in the version.txt is following 4.858.302.
In all other FW CD’s they were right, and FW2700 is bigger than this one.

Well the size of the file could just be cleaned up old code.. for start up and unit optimizing etc. I don’t think someone is able to create a working fake firmware…. and for what use ?

Before the instalation I made factory reset to zero point. After instalation rns working much more faster. No erro msg at all. HDD not deleted, maps still there. It is real 2720 version still stable working. (Passat 2009 may)

U must press buttons and keep for a while in this order: “eject” + “info” + “setup”. SWL will clean itself to zero point and ask for the new CD with the system. Maps are on the HDD not demage. If u want to clean HDD also u must instal 1100 version and next update to the higher numbers, but these downgrade or update clean everything including music and maps. In this metod u can correct also any mistakes which u made during previous instalations like not working buttons etc.

Hi Gulan! From which year is yr Passat? Videohack as u called still working – (eject) + (i) + (tone), but u can have the blockade in the car seafty instructions. To solve this problem at the begining try to edit all options in the RNS () + (i) just after reboot press (SETUP) and keep few seconds and after this u will edit all hidden options. Also remember than at that moemnt when u making upgrade or downgrade never turn on the car. Put the key only once to switch on the RNS only. For checking yr last upgrade (2720) make yr RNS display darker and brighter. If this option is working upgrade is done in the proper way. Remember all options like dvd blockade, edition of welcome screen or adding foto radars, video cameras or police patrols to original dvds is in oposition to the safety regulations.

DVD-vehicle in motion: formerly it was with (i)+(tone) with fw2660. Now I will try (eject)+(i)+(tone).
What I don’t completely understand is that you say that still then I can have a problem, will try that first because i think it is done properly. I did the upgrade as said. Open car/turn on rns (no start car)/clean SWL(eject-i-setup)/DVD insert.
I modify the program permanently. “Videohack” it was only bug in the program. Due to this bug u had dvd but no voice control during driving. If u want to change volume, operation should be making again. So better solution is to erese blockade permanently if u want to keep it.

The power drain issue shouldn’t be possible if it work fine with the 2680 firmware.
Have you checked which version of CAN gateway controller you’ve got in your car?
It should be 3C0 907 530 F of never.

I updated from 2684.
Everything works.
My 2684 was recoded, so before the update to 2724 (Skoda Octavia 2 FL) I had buttons on steeringwheel working, maxidot working with audio and navigation in it and hidden menu.
I editted the file for the hidden menu and i installed 2724.
After updating everything works normally and harddisk was not deleted.
I updated from 1200 to 2680 and then was trying to update to 2720 – SWL ERROR as well… Any ideas? I have ’09 (December) Tiguan.

I updated to 2720 (VW) and added the hidden menu option. It works fine, i also think that the unit is a little faster in respons!
Anybody discovered new features ? I came up with one I think waasn’t in the 2660: When you choose for called numbers in the phone function, you can sort them by name.

I have also made many tests with downgrading software to version 1100, 1200 and than back to 2680. Nothing helped. Always SWL Error. I have version C and hardware 04. Did anybody solve the problem?
Works fine for me on a Golf Variant 08/09.
No problems with navigation, Steeringwheel-buttons, displays etc…
New features? I don’t know, but it seems to be a little bit faster than 26xx – but this could be imagination

I found nothing new in 2720 except the “manual Video In Motion” not working yet. Nothing “more faster” or improved.
From version 2660 the links to the Rapidshare contain images that should be CD images, but not work when has been written like cd-s. You shuold write DVD disks (4X speed) to obtain working copies.
That’s not true. Tested and confirmed. No matter what you choose and record – neither CD or DVD – it doesn’t work. So I rather think of my previous information coded in user.cfg file as the right conclusion…

HARDWARE_C6 = 1
It probably means that only the newest hardware will be updated. Previous version, for example 2660 has:

HARDWARE_B1 = 0
HARDWARE_B2 = 0
HARDWARE_C = 0
HARDWARE_C3 = 1
HARDWARE_C4A = 1
HARDWARE_C4B = 1
HARDWARE_C6 = 1
That is probably the reason I cannot update my rev. C hardware 04 device.

Artek: yes, you can look also at #AppsBuild line in Version.txt file, which must contain C4A for rev. A units and
C6 for rev. B/C units.
If this assumption is correct, then latest 270x/272x/274x firmwares will not work with rev. A units, only 266x/268x.
