Volkswagen in the USA have extended the warranty on the high-mounted stoplight on the Golf GTI and R32 to 10 years due to non complaince with regulations that require owners to be able to change bulbs using simple tools. Replacing the high mounted stoplight on the Golf GTI and R32 requires slicing the spoiler from the roof with a risk of damage to the car or the spoiler and it takes the best part of a day to perform for a user to replace and 3-4 hours for a dealer to replace.
Volkswagen have accepted that Golf GTI and R32’s are non compliant with FMVSS 108 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108) and have sent letters to owners with details of the extension .
Australia which has similar regulations has not seen an extension of warranty at this stage and it’s unlikely to do so due to weak consumer laws.
The problem is compounded by a condensation problem across all years of the Mark V GTI and R32 with the high-mounted stoplight which if left unchecked results in failure.
FMVSS 108 states
(5) Shall provide access for convenient replacement of the bulbs without special tools.
