Adding a microphone to the RNS 510 to enable voice control is a simple process and there are a number of ways to go about it.
Option 1 – use the factory microphone as used in the Skoda bluetooth kit
The factory microphone is fitted in the overhead console and run to the rear of the RNS 510 (green highlighted connectors).
Parts Required
- 1 x 3B0 035 711 B41 (3B0035711B41) – Microphone – Satin Black
- 1 x 8D0 972 643 (8D0972643) – 2 Pin Housing
- 1 x 000 979 017 (000979017) – Repair Wire 0.5mm
- 1 x 3B7 035 447 B (3B7035447B) – 12 Pin Green Housing
- 1 x 000 979 009 (000979009) - Repair Wire 0.5mm
- 3m of microphone cable
- 2 core 14/.020 shielded cable (DRAKA DE FLRYWBYM 0.5-A+0.5-A is suitable) or
- RG174 with 2mm and 3mm heat shrink tubing.
- The 2 core cable is the easiest to connect you don’t need to heatshrink the shield and use it as the ground.
Install the microphone into the overhead compartment. Join the microphone wire to the 2 pin housing and route via the A pillar to the rear of the RNS 510 and connect to pins 1 and 7. The repair wires are cut into two giving you two pins. Ensure you have the polarity correct!
Option 2 – use the factory microphone that is used with the Skoda bluetooth kit
This routes the cable from the microphone to the RNS 510 (green highlighted connectors) and from the RNS 510 (purple highlighted connectors) to the bluetooth instead of it running from the microphone directely to the bluetooth unit.
Parts Required
- 2 x 000 979 009 (000979009) - Repair Wire 0.5mm
- 3m of microphone cable
- 2 core 14/.020 shielded cable (DRAKA DE FLRYWBYM 0.5-A+0.5-A is suitable) or
- RG174 with 2mm and 3mm heat shrink tubing.
- The 2 core cable is the easiest to connect you don’t need to heatshrink the shield and use it as the ground.
Cut the existing microphone cable around 5cm back from the Skoda bluetooth connector and route this to the rear of the RNS 510 along with one end of the microphone cable. The cable from the microphone is trimmed to the correct length and connected to the repair wire that has been cut into two. Keep the length of the repair wire as short as possible (under 5cm) to maintain the shielding. This cable connects to pins 1 and 7.
The new cable that you also have behind the RNS 510 is connected to repair wire cut in two and pins 4 and 9 and the other end after being trimmed is connected where you cut off the microphone cable at the Skoda bluetooth connector. Ensure you have the polarity correct!
Option 3 – use a 3rd party microphone (not tested nor has this been documented)
- 1 x 3B7 035 447 B (3B7035447B) – 12 Pin Green Housing
- 1 x 000 979 009 (000979009) - Repair Wire 0.5mm
- 1-3m of microphone cable depending on microphone location
Install the microphone, connect to the microphone wire and route to the rear of the RNS 510 and connect to pins 1 and 7. The repair wire is cut into two giving you two pins. Ensure you have the polarity correct!
After the hardware has been sorted coding is required on the head unit using Vagcom/VCDS.
Open controller 37 and click on coding.
Click on Long Coding Helper
Select Byte 3 and Bit 1 to enable Microphone Diagnostics (not essential but will alert you to problems with Microphone)
Finally deselect Byte 7 and Bit 1 to enable voice control and save the settings.
Multi Function Steering Wheel – Voice activation (optional)
If you car is fitted with the Multi Function Steering Wheel you can modify the mute button (* on the VW models) to activate the voice feature. This will not work if you have the Skoda car kit as this uses the mute buttone (*) for it’s voice dialling, no workaround has been found at this time so use the top right hand button adjacant to the dvd slot to active the feature.
Controller 16 – Steering
Select Coding 07 and you should see a 7 digit softcode which will be in the format 00xxxxx
The 4th digit from the right corresponds to the steering wheel variant. If you have a 4 spoke Multi Function Steering Wheel without the Cruise Control buttons it should be a 2. Change this to a 3 and that should convert your Mute button to activate the Voice Dialling.

Hi! I did the option 2 install with my new Skoda Superb with a twist. There’s factory installed bluetooth (basic model, HFP capable) and retrofitted Columbus (RSN 510) in the car. Instead of cutting the mic wires at the bluetooth module end, I pulled the wires out of the connector (use a needle or other thin instrument to push down the very small lever securing the pin into the connector and pull gently, it should come out nicely) and inserted repair wires into the pins 11 and 12 instead. The I combined the three wires for positive and negative signals: original mic wire, repair wire connected to the bluetooth module and new mic wire routed to the Columbus. You need to come up with some fancy connection in order have the wires hold together in a secure way but I guess you can manage it. This way there’s no permanent damage done to the original equipment and you’re able to undo the installation if you must (like if you need service for the bluetooth setup under guarantee plan, I guess the guarantee will be void if you cut some of the original wires…)
