Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue

VAG 1K0907530S CAN bus gateway

VAG 1K0907530S CAN bus gateway

Early build Volkswagen cars can experience a power drain issue after upgrading their 2nd generation headunit from a RCD 300 or RCD 500 to a 3rd generation headunit like the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510.

The problem is the CAN bus Gateway is too old and an updated version 1k0907530 (1k0 907 530) of L revision or higher is required - CAN bus gateway removing, installing and upgrading – Volkswagen Golf.

in vehicles belonging to the model series PQ35/PQ46 from
model year 2008 as well as the Tiguan,

Vehicles belonging to the model series PQ35/PQ46 from model year 2008 (MY08) as well as the Tiguan have gateways that are updated. Earlier models may require the updated CAN bus gateway to be installed. See Volkswagen Model Year Information for more details on the week of manufacture however generally Volkswagen change over Model Years around Week 22.

This problem does not* affect retrofits of the RNS 510 which is a 3rd generation head unit as this unit was in the production in 2007 whereas the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 are recent additions.

Check the ‘Skoda Parts’ link (right hand menu) for a reasonably priced gateway. Revisions that will work after the 1K0 907 530 S (1K0907530S) revision include 1K0 907 530 AA (1K0907530AA), 1K0 907 530 AB (1K0907530AB) and 1K0 907 530 AC (1K0907530AC).

* This problem does now affect the RNS 510 if the firmware is upgraded to 2660 or higher. The RNS 510 will exhibit the same problems as the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310 and RCD 510 and requires the CAN bus gateway to be upgraded.

Stop asking if the gateway upgrade will fix the problem guys, of course it will! you can always send the gatway to someone who can code them for you also…

For people having trouble with steering wheel control after rns installed, your rns needs to be coded and the gateway, there is an option in the rns called steering buttons BAP, turn that off, inside gateway, go to byte 4 and activate bit 1 [47] sound system, bit 3 [37] navigation, bit 6 [56] radio (analog)… close vagcom, now with the car ignition still turned on press and hold the navigation buttons and the speaker icon button at the right hand side, keep holding for at least 15-20 seconds. this will cause a soft reset to the unit and allow the MFD+ to display the RNS.

How do you get to the Gateway on a UK MY06 Golf GTI. It seems they are in a diffeent place on UK GTIs.
The Gateway seems to be postioned behind the steering wheel / dash panel area. I cant see any easy way to access it. Ive had a RCD510 sitting around for a year now waiting to be installed.

    Thanks

  • I have this CAN Bus gateway in my 2008 Passat Variant. Do I need to upgrade it if I’m going to install an RCD 510 build in 2009?

Does anyone know if the 1K0907530 AD revision gateway will work in a 2007 MkV Golf in order to replace the RCD300 with an RCD310?
The AD revisions seem to be the current available rev.

    Hi,

I have a problem related to this. I have a VW Jetta MY2009 (manufactured in october 2008). My car was originally fitted with a RDC210. I bought and installed a used RCD310 from a Caddy MY2009 and had my local VW dealer re-program the radio code. Recently I bought a Dension Gateway Five to enjoy music from an usb memory. Actually I have tested two verision of the GW Five. The first (CAN version) worked ok but it only displayed music an phone calls in the cluster display. The second (BAP version) didn’t almost work at all. It displayed the songs on both the cluster display end the radio but that was all, no phone function worked.

My question is: Is it possible to upgrade my car from CAN to BAP?

  • Apippi78

Hi! I have a problem related with gateway upgrade. I have a Golf V my 2007 and it mounted an “L” gateway revision. I bought an RCD 310 and this gateway: 1K0 907 530 AB
Now I’ve got problems with ESP: the warning light doesn’t work anymore and even if I push the ESP key, it doesn’t work. What should I do? Thanks

Hi will the 1ko907530AD gateway stop my power drain issue?

  • K22ers

    Hi Maverick.

I found this site very helpful. I solved my power drain issue out by downgrading my sw from 2720 to 1110. No it works perfect and doesn’t look that much different. Thanks again coz without this site I would have been stuck or ripped off….

For a 2005 Touareg fitting a RNS510C Head Unit, what is the part number of the Gateway to be used ? Where is the Gateway located on the Touareg 2005 ?

    Thanks

  • Kim

I am also interested in fitting a RNS510C Head unit in my 05 Touareg. And would like to know this info.

  • Fastmp

I found a solution to the power drain issue by connecting radio fuse power in to the ECU power rail in the fuse box which shuts down shortly after switching off your car. All it takes is some wire, terminals to plug into the fuse box and a fuse holder. It took me about an hour to do and I’ve been running my system for 8 months like this. It’s not the cleanest solution and you have to remove it every time you take your car to VW but it’s costs almost nothing. I have photos if required.

  • Jack

Could you mind to send me the mail also?

    Thank you.

I need your help guys-went to vw dealer today and got a nasty surprise-i was told that they are not upgrating canbus gateway and never done that in the past.i bought rns51o unit about a month ago and cant start using it because it causes power drain out.however the guy in vw garrage told me to try somwhere else so i went to the compnay called cartronics and company called safesounds-in both places i was told the same thing-it needs an upgrade that can be done in vw garrage only, and they cant help me at all-dont understand how is that posible?it means that the radio i bought is useless in i spend 700euros for nothing….i live in dublin,if anyone know any place where i can upgrade my canbus gateway please let me know by an email.thanks(matthewsulivan10@gmail.com

    • Maverick

I can’t give you any specific places to go but any VW specialists should be able to replace this for you in an hour. Maybe check any forums where locals are and see if someone has Vagcom/VCDS and can give you a hand. You can buy the gateways on ebay cheaply as well.

      • Matthew

thanks for responce maverick.i bought new canbus went to vw service today again and they said that they dont have codes, bla bla bla that it will not work, the errors will occur and things like that…..i mean how come the vw garrage cant help me with such a simple thing?im sure anywhere else in europe i would have got it in my car,but in ireland only mupets work for vw….

seriously-dont know what to do and where to go-spend so much money on the rns and the canbus but cant start using it…dissapointed…

  • Maverick: RNS510 – Do i need a CANBUS upgrade for the MY07 MKV 2.0TDI??

Hi maverick, i have done a search on the vwwatercooled.org.au forum and cant get a Professional answer on this.

Do i need to Upgrade anything before i attempt to install a Version C L.E.D RNS510 (With latest firmware)

as i have purchased one off eBay for around the $1000.00 mark landed which i think was brilliant value, however i hear if i need to upgrade my CANBUS (to avoid the dreaded battery drain) then it will cost a few hundred dollars and which canbus to buy and where from.

Can anyone give me some correct advice??
My cars build date is August 06 and the compliance date is 1/07

    Cheers,
    robbie

    • Maverick

I’d say yes based on your manufacturer date, it’s very unlikely that you would not suffer from the power drain problem. You can pick the gateways up for around $75-100 on ebay.de and ask them if they will ship to Australia as many will. Alternatively the link on this page to buy them from the Czech Republic is around $130 delivered and less hassle for a new one.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    • JC

Fastmp – Many Thanks for this. What fuse are you using and why do you remove it when it goes in for VW servicing. Has it thrown up any errors on VAGCOM that you know of?

      Thanks

    • Anders

I wonder if you could tell what car you have…

      • Fastmp

It is a Golf 5 GTI 2007. I had to test with a multimeter which rails switches off when the car is left standing for 5 – 10 minutes.
I assume that most other VWs might have a different fuse box but it should still work if you can find the correct rail.

        • Anders

          Thanks for answer :)

Now i have insatlled my RCD-510, but not upgraded my gateway. How long will it go before my battery drains?

I could seem that I don’t have this battery drain problem :)

Thanks FastMP for the photos….short trip to halfords tomorrow and I am set to go.
Has any one tried this? has it curred the problem?…ps updrading RCD300 to RCD510 in Passat 07. wish me luck.

  • steve

why do u have to remove jumpers when u take to vw for service or repairs?
cant it just stay there all the time?

    • Fastmp

VW might not like you messing with their wiring of the car and to avoid you losing your warranty you should remove the bypass.

  • HAE

Had alook at the fuse box today and it looks different to the pictures. have located the radio fuse, queston is how to identify ECU power rail in the fuse box!? is it any unused fuse slot!?….please help

  • HAE

:( looked at the wiring diagram for both configurations VW fuse boxes and used a similar vacant fuse slot……last night battery dead. Iam thinking if the drain is from the constant red wire from battery, then ultimatly the drainage is happending at the unit..i mean doesnt matter whichever slot you use, the Radio will always drain the battery…going mad here please help :(

    • Ola

DID YOU FINALLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF YOUR ECU?, COS I’M RUNNING MAD HERE AS WELL

    • Ola

I finally cracked it, for my passat, just like fast mp did, but the down side to this method is that everytime you turn off your engine and restart, the cd player will need to start the music all over again rather than continuing from where the music was playing.More like rebooting again nlike the sky box being turned off from the wall socket.

  • Maverick,
You may be able to help me! I have a 2008 Passat 2.0 tdi with ths problem: Car recognises my phone OK but when I make or receive a call even though the radio shows PHONE and the volume bar shows full volume I have no sound – only a slight hissing noise.

  • Flavio (Brazil)

    Dear friends,

I’d like to apologize in advance. I’m not sure if this is the correct topic related to my issue.

I have a Jetta 2008 (produced in Mexico) and just installed a RCD-510. It´s working normally to play CDs and SD. I can also control the music from my steering wheel.

The point is…!!! I can’t see the air conditioning changes, open doors, etc on the screen!
Is there something wrong with the software version?

    Thank you very much!

    Flavio.

I own a 2007 Golf 2.0 TDI. Build date 08/07. I have recently just purchased an RCD 310. Will I need to upgrade the CAN Bus gateway? Or will my current gateway do as its a late model 07? Thanks to anyone that can help answer my query.
